In response to the criticism arising from the Aaron Hernandez case, the NFL is considering a change that, in our view, ultimately will have no impact on the decision of teams to take chances on players with questionable backgrounds

I misstated the NFL 3 year rule..thanks...care to comment about the discrepancy between the NFL and NBA policies?
I was stationed in Spain from 68-72..and I think it was 1971, the Harlem Globetrotters came to Barcelona for an exhibition game. It was outdoors, at the Plaza Cataluna..just unreal..I was with a couple of Marine NCOs who were both tall and black...people kept on stopping us and asking for autographs..I signed easily over a hundred....they shut it down, and built an elevated court..I think that the crowd was estimated at 50,000 when the stopped trying to count..I realized then that the NBA/American basketball had a global appeal..
The NBA didn’t really understand the point of the NFL rule. The NCAA was getting upset that the NBA was grabbing players straight out of high school, big star players like Kobe and LeBron, players that were going to make the NCAA a lot of money, so they copied the NFL rule. But having done it right after the NFL got sued they went for only one year, to avoid lawsuits. They thought the whole point was to get the star players in college for a bit. But the NFL rule isn’t for that. It’s to give the players another layer, more time to grow physically and mentally, get stronger, play in a faster game than high school with a longer season, but not as fast or long as the NFL. It’s actually a very self serving, they figured out that 18 year olds aren’t ready for the NFL, not for the speed of the game, not for the physical intensity of the game, not ready for the money, and not ready for the “side benefits”. The rule is as much about avoiding Greg Oden as it is Maurice Clarett, but the NBA thinks it’s just to appease the NCAA.
No, Aaron Hernandez will ultimately have an impact on teams considering academically ineligible players.
NFL stars, and NFL games, seem to have solid international appeal. The “American Bowl” series (NFL games played internationally) has been a raving success, for a long time a pre-season game played in Mexico City was the highest attended NFL game ever. But even pre-season games feature real NFL stars taking a couple of snaps. NFL Europe didn’t do that, a few of the players made it to the NFL proper, but most of them landed 3rd or 4th on the depth chart. Nobody went to Europe a star, nobody left Europe to become a star. Which is why it failed, while real NFL games in Europe do quite well, getting 2 next season.
The signs were there from the beginning that Hernandez was not right. If I could see them, anyone could have.
They were lined up returning his tees and sweatshirts at the stadium today.
Nice to see.
.
Many thanks for the incisive comments..
Read Tom Wolfe’s “Man In Full.” One of the characters is a teen athlete destined for the pros who gets himself in trouble with a rape charge. Wolfe nails perfectly the whole culture of bending over backwards to accomodate “gifted athletes” so they can get through college even though they are as dumb as a bag of hammers. Of course, the athlete in the book is a contemptible, anti-social jerk who feels he is above the law because he can toss a basketball into a round hoop.
Let me be the first to say...mission accomplished.
You could probably say the same for Major League Baseball, in which most players come up to bat maybe 3 or 4 times in a game and aside from the pitcher and catcher, spend the majority of the time on the field picking their noses, waiting for a ball to come their way.
Both games however can be very interesting once you learn the intricacies of the sport, which elude the casual spectator.
Oh yes, they said baseball was not too far behind.
Hockey on the otherhand, is 60 full minutes of play and action.
they aren’t allowed to participate and with no other option they usually end up entering the NFL draft, even if they have little chance of being selected...
I read he scored the lowest possible score on his NFL psyche test for social maturity - but they signed him anyway. I assume this test had questions like:
Q. “If someone cuts you off in traffic do you let then go or do you shoot them?”
A. “Oh I shoot them!”
Let’s sign this man to a $40 million contract!
How big was the gun put to your head that made you post to a thread of something you disdain?
I suggest you stick with your eurochick “sports.”
Seriously... you are pretty ignorant if you believe rugby is faggoty in any way. It’s the closest thing to raw male athleticism there is... a gruelling endurance sport... when there is an injury... play goes on while the guy is writhing in pain on the ground with a dislocated shoulder being popped back into its socket. Whatever, dude.

Hey, if chicks popping sockets gets you off, I won’t be the one to say that you shouldn’t enjoy it.
You eurochick lovers always like the dykamics...
Your obviously interested. You commented on an NFL thread. If you don’t like football why are you even on this thread?
I’m tired of all the fake-ass self rightous a-holes who come on the football threads and bash those of us who enjoy game.
“Academically ineligible” should not be in college. Let the NFL start it’s own “minor leagues” Every college athlete should be required to have the “average” S A T of that college. Even better, ELIMINATE athletic scholarships, as the IVY LEAGUE did over 60 years ago(they do give some “leeway” to athletes as do the Military Academy’s )
