In Part II, I described a gun battle that took place in a vacant lot just up the road from my home. Someone was killed in that battle. The police took almost 40 minutes to respond and their response was less than reassuring.
I had grown up equating police with comic book superheroes that maintained law and order and guarded me against criminals. Following the gun battle, I was troubled by daunting questions like:
Why did it take the police so long to respond?
What would I have done if the gun battle had spilled over onto our property or into our home?
How could the police miss a dead body when they searched the lot?
Could the police be held responsible for failing to keeping us safe?
This last question was pivotal in my journey to becoming a gun owner. I found an online article written by D.C. attorney Richard W. Smith entitled Just Dial 911? The Myth of Police Protection. If you have not read this excellent article, please do so at http://www.fee.org/the_freeman/detail/just-dial-911-the-myth-of-police-protection/#ixzz2PhOG6EDy. Give it to family and friends who think that 9-1-1 will save them. This article made it clear that lawsuits against police for failure to respond to 9-1-1 calls had been struck down all around the country. I was dumbfounded! I asked, How can the police not be held responsible for failing to respond to a call for help?
The answer turned my liberal beliefs on their head- the courts held that I was responsible for my own personal safety and the safety of my family. The police were legally responsible to maintain order in a general sense in society, but not in the case of an individual.
This meant that the law expected me to protect myself first and that I had no right to expect the police to protect me individually or my family from criminals! I am not a big guy and I have a disability; so, how would I protect myself without the police? More on the police in Part IV.
>>the courts held that I was responsible for my own personal safety and the safety of my family<<
This is the basis of our 2nd Amendment. Self defense is an unspoken right.
A truth is, you are responsible for yourself and your family - no one else is.
1. Your safety is your responsibility - you have figured that one out.
2. Your basic needs to stay alive are your responsibility. If there is no water in your faucet, you can’t sue the water company and if you did, you would be dead in three days without water and never get to court anyway. If you have no plan for water, make one - it’s your responsibility.
3. No one is responsible for having food for you. That is your responsibility. If there is no food at the grocery or restaurant, you must provide it. If you have no plan for food, make one - it’s your responsibility.
4. No one is responsible for you to have a way to cook - it is your responsibility. If there is no power, there is no one for you to sue. If you have no plan for a way to cook - make one - it is your responsibility.
5. With no power, you have no light. If you have no plan to have light - make one - it is your responsibility.
6. With no power, you have no cooling or warmth. If you have no plan to have cooling and warmth - make one - it is your responsibility.
The above truths are just that - truths. Don’t trust your life to someone you don’t even know to provide you with critical life needs.

the definition of police:
1 to control, regulate, or keep in order by use of police
2 to make clean and put in order
I worked right out of high school for the local Geno’s hamburger chain. my first job was porter. Policing the grounds was one of the tasks. I never forgot the term and have seen it used repeatedly correctly.
In our minds we have a vision of some superhero coming to our rescue, but the reality is quite different. Each officer weighs the situation as they show up and many would rather just wait it out to see how it goes rather than rush into a gunfight. Today they are in jeopardy as much as the perp if things don't go well. If they do rush to your aid, they may be thought of as a loose cannon or a "cowboy".
IMO, it's best to have a weapon and protect yourself in the first moments of trouble than to mess with cops that may be having a bad day. The police mainly draw the chalk lines and put up the yellow tape.
I have heard that from more than one policeman. They want to go home in one piece at the end of the day.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts especially since your daughter is a LEO.
Local LEO’s have a difficult job today because they do not know what kind of people they can be dealing with or what situations they may face. And the mass of regulations often make their jobs harder. My heart goes out to the decent, hard-working LEO’s.
There certainly have been issues in recent years with the militarization of local police and police overstepping their authority. Nevertheless, my post focused on my dawning realization that the cops could not be expected to save me.
My next post which is due out later today will focus on the police in greater detail; so, please stay tuned.
I am sure you have noticed that the govt does not wish you to think this way. As they shut off food, water, guns, ammunition, air, etc... They tell you to just vote correctly and they will supply all your needs according to their riches and glory.
Q-ManRN lives in my house and he has learned first hand that all our needs must be supplied by US -- and I must say he has made quite the conversion!!! :-)
True enough and thank you for the note about my conversion.
