As if the morning commute couldn't have gotten worse for everyone. A big-rig driver reportedly slammed into the toll plaza at the Golden Gate Bridge as he tried desperately to make his way to San Francisco. The bizarre crash happened during rush hour at about 8:43 a.m. along the third southbound lane from the left at the toll plaza on the southern end of the bridge, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay told KTVU.
Naturally, the toll plaza was damaged, as was the front of the truck, and everyone's mood about the morning commute. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.
Now for the burning question: What the hell?
Golden Gate Bridge spokeswoman Mary Currie says the big-rig driver tried -- and failed -- to use a lane that was "too narrow for the truck."
The big-rig was stuck until about 9:40 a.m., obnoxiously blocking three southbound lanes at the toll plaza.
I once had the extreme bad luck of being about 6 or 7 vehicles behind an over height truck (set off the over ht detector—I saw it but nothing I could do but brake!) that got stuck in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill Tunnel. Can we say gridlock? Amazingly NO accidents occurred—probably because anyone paying attention (except the rig driver) saw the flashing lights & knew what was about to happen.
They has to let the air out of the tires to tow it out.
Has = HAD. My phone hates me.
I took my kidz through the SHT one day and accelerated to make sure we were next to some unmuffled motorcycles all the way through. Should’a had ear muffs on. The kidz were impressed though.
OMG...I wonder if he had that fleeting feeling of “I wonder if the damage is really bad...”
Hahahahaha,..you got nothing on what one of my co-workers told me today.
She got a new iPhone, and sent her daughter a message and it said “I’ll be darned if I am paying 20 dollars for herpes..”
I can’t remember what she said her daughter MEANT to say, but...that’s pretty funny!
Heheheh. Valley speak has infected our culture! We knew it wouldn’t take long...
So far the east end of it has been demolished twice by 18 wheelers trying to fit through it.
In each case the drivers were following the route instructions given by them from their home offices.
The height is clearly marked as well as the weight limit, 9 tons, as you approach it.
The bridge went over a hundred years without suffering this kind of damage caused by the blind use of information gleaned from sources on computers and GPS.
This was probably a new immigrant from Europe or Mexico who couldn’t read English.
We need Mexican truckers to cause the mayhem that American drivers won’t.
Damn illiterates and illegals (who can't read English) are driving big rigs all over the country these days.
Well, they each seemed to do pretty good jobs at reading the instructions their idiot dispatchers had given them.
1 & 2 are clearly marked as wide lanes. He is in lane 3.
I think they had the lane on either side of the truck blocked off too.
I worked at a casino/resort that had a pedestrian walkway over a road that allowed 13’6” clearance; until they repaved the roadway underneath.
It was a damned big truck that made the discovery.
FYI darling!
They need a sign telling drivers where the trucks must go. Wait....what....oh. Well the sign should be yellow with large black letters,,,, just a second.
"No hablo ingles!"
