The New Zealand authorities have formally called off the search for the sailing cruiser Nina, and say its seven-person crew, which includes Evi Nemeth who for the last 30 years has written the system administration handbooks for Unix and Linux, is now presumed lost at sea.
Nemeth was sailing off the western coast of New Zealand in the missing 21-metre vintage wooden schooner with its owner David Dyche, 58; his wife, Rosemary, 60, and their son David, 17; Kyle Jackson, 27; Danielle Wright, 18, and Briton Matthew Wootton, 35. The boat was last heard from on June 4, when Nemeth requested meteorological information about rough weather they were encountering.
"Sails shredded last night," along with the promise of a course update later, was the last message from the Nina, the authorities said on Thursday. The update never came.

Not that a steel boat can’t sink....I don’t want to come across as some knowitall. God bless all the sailors at sea. When you are on the land and the wind is howling and the rain is lashing, imagine being out in 25’ waves with twice the wind.
Still, I’d take that fate over waking up in an old folks’ home stuck with needles and tubes. Anyday.

I was astounded at what is now possible (22 knots in a 60' canting keel sailboat). These guys and gals circumnavigate the globe, alone, in 90 days!
My “favorite” line from news casters is, the storm passed safely out to sea. Well, I was out there and I didn’t feel so safe hearing that.
Yep, way out of my league. My boat can just about make 130 miles on a good day, but it’s a Cadillac ride.

Exactly. They also call hurricanes at sea “fish storms” because that’s all they think are bothered.
Man, it surely sucks being out there when the waves get big and steep. Fatigue and hypothermia start wearing you down, and there is just fear and dread for days at a time.
It’s not for everybody, that’s for sure. Like being on a roller coaster in a lightning storm for days at a time, and you can’t get off.

They put out the 10th addition of their admin book in 2010. The front cover was of a wooden ship. There is lots of activity, but someone is dumping a coffin overboard. The “someone” is ‘less’ and the coffin is ‘more’. It signifies that nobody uses the ‘more’ command since ‘less’ is better.
Interesting that the last edition would have a coffin being dumped overboard.

Stories flooded the internet yesterday stating the Men In Black star had died while filming in New Zealand.
The false report comes in the week Outrageous Fortune actress Robyn Malcolm didn’t plummet from the same cliffs, near Matauri Bay.
