The Lone Ranger is no match for a group of nattering yellow creatures known to film fans as "Minions."
The western reboot, a P.C. affair driven by the creative team behind the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, is losing the box office battle to a kiddie sequel. And it's not even close.
Despicable Me 2, starring the voice of Steve Carell and those adorable Minions, is off to a blazing start with an estimated $35 million haul today alone. The Lone Ranger, starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, is expected to bring in $15 million, by comparison.
The Ranger reboot got off to a rocky start early on with the project briefly scrapped before being revived.
Now, it must reverse its initial box office figures and score big overseas to make up for its bloated $225 million-plus budget.

Kiddie movies have a built-in box office bonus...junior wants to go; mom and dad get dragged along. Three ticket sales in the bag. I wonder how these movies would do if parents didn’t have to tag along. (Yes...I realize there are actually some adults that want to see these, as well.)
I saw the last LR movie and I’ll see this one. Big fan of the TV show as a youngster.
I already know I won’t like Pirates of the Lone Ranger.
Can’t we just have a simplier old time western without train hopping and such.
Do we really need a stronger Tonto stealing the scenes. Wasn’t he strong in the series. Do we need a Goth Tonto?
For me the Lone Ranger was Clayton Moore and Tonto was Jay Silverheels. End of story. First Johnny Depp messes with Dark Shadows, now this. He looks like a freak.
I’m wondering why no one made a fuss when Johnny Depp, who thinks he might have Cherokee blood somewhere in his ancestry, plays a fake Indian. Exactly what tribe is he supposed to be from? Apache? Navaho? Commanche?
His thin body is not consistent with these tribes, any more than was Diamond Philipps (a FilAm who played an Indian in the Young guns series).
Yes, I know Hollywood often casts across ethnic lines, but things seem to be getting worse lately. There are a lot of talented American Indian Actors (Canadian Graham Greene for example): Apocolyptico and the movie on the code talkers come in mind.... Or they could have cast a Mexican American actor in the role, since most Mexicans who come to the US are metziso with Indian blood.
At least the original Long Ranger had Jay Silverheel play Tonto...
I have the last LR movie somewhere and converted it to avi by one of our techies here in L.A. The villain in that movie was Christopher Lloyd, better known as Doc Brown from Back to the Future trilogy...
By PC I guess they mean a really smart minority and a dopey white guy.
yes
and din’t one of the Keach brothers dub over the LR voice?
Johnny Depp is still wearing eye shadow, too. He can’t drop the metrosexual thing.
yes and I couldn’t miss some of the constant ads running the last week.
I hear the bird is dead and he “feeds” it.
The LA time (at the coffee shop free, not paid by me) gave them a very bad review.
It’s depp’s movie to bomb. Well see what happens.
“Like”.
I watched “Dark Shadows” for Bella Heathcote. An angel if there ever was one.
I'm not planning to see this new movie, nor did I see the newest Superman. The ones from our youth were just too much fun to be messing with them.
I think these westerns and Star Trek and others were filmed on the same ranch in the SF Valley or just north where the Manson gang held out for awhile.
The rocks where the LR and Tonto ride around are the same where Kirk fought the monster mano a mano, IIRC.
I liked Man of Steel except for the 20 minute tear up the scenery fight at the end.
I went to the box office and asked for a ticket to Superman. The kid looked at me like I was speaking another language.
Every time they refer to Johnny Depp as "Tonto," they will be saying something like "Hey, Stupid."
I saw Despicable Me 2 today and LOVED it..gotta love those adorable little Minions..the theater was packed, every screen playing it was packed. I checked out the screen playing The Lone Ranger and hardly anyone was there, but this was in the afternoon so maybe the evening rush more will come and see it
