I attended a screener of the Lone Ranger movie last night, the director Gore Verbinski dropped by and introduced the opening of the film. In summary (and without spoilers): The Lone Ranger character starts out as weak and naive and ends the movie as a weak and naive but now following Tonto. I struggle to remember if any of the white male characters were portrayed as anything other than evil, racist, greedy, inept, or religious zealots. Even the military is not spared; the cavalry captain is portrayed as Hollywoods stereotypical General Custer type replete with Van Dyke beard and long hair. Other irritations: The band is knocked off the stage while playing the Star Spangled Banner, only the villains speak of love for god and country, only the evil characters use guns to kill people and even Gettysburg is mentioned but only as a rational of why the bad guy is bad. This is not a movie to see during the week of July 4th.
And it stars Johnny Depp. How shocking. (Don’t make me put that tag on it.)
Then why are the critics beating up on it? Based on what you say; they should love it.

Thanks for the heads up.
I shall take a pass on this one. Yechhh.
Seriously, you ever see an Indian who looked like that? Black and white vertical stripes with a whole dead crow on his head?
Another pay day for Depp.
He keeps cashing in because idiots subsidize this crap.
Just from the quick trailers on TV it appeared to be quite stupid.
Thank you for the review. My family will not be seeing this movie. Ever.
Similar to the wholesale stupidity of the Green Hornet movie.
DOn’t worry. It’ll get creamed by “Despicable Me II” and “Monster University”.
Captain Jack Tonto.
Shame, it was filmed in NM, and I always like seeing the scenery.
Lone Ranger and Tonto are trapped, surrounded by blood thirsty Indians...
Lone Ranger: "Tonto, old friend, we're in big trouble..."
Tonto: "Kemo Sabe, what's with this WE sh*t?"
Depp ripped it off for the movie.
Sounds like it could be even worse than the Lone Ranger movie that came out in the early 80’s. The one where they got an injunction telling Clayton Moore he could no longer wear the mask in public.
Huh! Excellent research! Even so Depp looks ridiculous in that getup. Jay Silverheels’ portrayal was much more respectful to Indians IMO.
I wonder if Klinton Spilsbury has a cameo?
Seems like the Pirates schtick just couldn’t be suppressed, huh?
Just seeing a photo of Depp supposedly playing Tonto was enough to cause one to decide decisively not to see this nonsense.
Depp with a bird perched atop his head as if ready to take a healthy crap was enough to churn stomachs.
The original version was “What do you mean we, white man”
