Baby Moose Gets Ride In Canadian Mountie's Cruiser
UPI ^ | June 24, 2013

A Canadian Mountie gave a possibly orphaned baby moose a ride in a cruiser to an animal protection group that is caring for it, the group's manager says.

The calf, about 3 or 4 weeks old, drew a crowd Sunday along the Trans-Canada Highway near Appleton, Newfoundland, Bonnie Harris of the Gander Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

"The moose was crying out for its mom, but no sign of her," Harris saiid.

"A couple of people from the Glenwood area had said that there were two moose hit in the last week in that area, so we assumed it was probably mom that was hit."

The young moose was placed in the back of a Royal Canadian Mounted Police cruiser and taken to the Gander SPCA where she calmed down after slurping down a gallon of milk.

"She would never have had a chance left out there," Harris said. "We don't know what her chances are now, but at least she has a chance now."

Plans are to transfer the moose to Salmonier Nature Park before long.

The animal's caretakers are considering naming it Apple, since it was found near Appleton.

Lovely story. Posting this before the usual wannabe killers write in about slaughtering it.

The Mountie had better be careful if he has a sister.

That’s because there are hardly any big bears in Newfoundland. They’re the apex predator in other parts of the continent.....It’s been estimated that more than 50% of moose calves are killed by grizzlies within their first year. That’s what keeps the numbers down..

My wife thinks it’s a lie about all the moose in Newfoundland. We spent 6 days driving from one end to the other in 2009, and never saw a single moose.

We spend 30 minutes driving around Jackson Hole and see 5.

My wife says there are no moose in Newfoundland. It’s a lie to attract tourists.

Next thing you know, Mounties will say things like please and thank you and, like, get along with people, and stuff...

Canadian cops behave a tad differently than American cops.
