Jada were a popular night club act at Club Lido in Panama City. Not surprisingly, her routine was entitled Beauty and the Beast. She is shown here performing for the sailors of the US Task Force 11, while they were on leave. The troops were on their way to New York City to participate in Navy Day celebrations, but made a stop before passing through the Panama Canal.

The Christian Science Reading Room must have been closed that evening, how else can you explain such a crowd.

Yes, back when American sailors still dressed like sailors should.

Hey those guys look like “real” men...not the ones we have today...a bit rough around the edges but not so much a good woman couldn’t handle.

Look at all the eyes locked on that gorilla. Sea duty will do that to you.

And that was the 1930s, folks. If you ever need proof why we’re better than the Muslims, there it is. We’ve never been afraid of pretty ladies.

1945. Some of those guys had been through hell. I wonder what would have happened to the REMF that crashed their party and told them that what they were doing was degrading to woman and they were facing court martial.

Thanks for the Eddie Condon link. I never heard of him. I’ve started a Pandora radio station now based on his music.

USS SEMMES DDG 18 I had no idea (until just now) that they had named a ship for Raphael Semmes. That pleases me greatly. I take it you served aboard her?

I pulled Shore Patrol in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Operation Springboard...a dozen Cans, a Tender, and I think it was the Guadalcanal in port.
What fun that was...they gave us a handfull of dimes, a balsa wood baton, and a phone number to call for reinforcements.
