German doctors are calling for gay men to be allowed to donate blood. Currently a Europe-wide ban prevents them from doing so, but the German Health Minister said he would welcome a relaxation of the rules.
The German Medical Association (BÄK) said that it would do everything within its means to remove the blanket ban on men who have sex with men, those with lots of sexual partners and prostitutes, from donating blood.

These decisions are not based on science anymore; they are actually antithetical to real science.
The medical associations, psych associations, and health agencies are owned by homosexuals now. Don’t ever expect any sanity to come from them.
In all fairness, blood is filthy stuff. While everyone’s blood contains contaminants, “allogeneic blood”, blood from other people, is far more dangerous than “autologous blood” that a person donates with intention that it be put back in them during surgery.
A lot of problems are overcome by using tricks to get around the need for allogeneic blood. For example, stimulants that increase red blood cell production, other fluids to keep up the total fluid level preventing shock, such as blood substitutes. A lot of research is going into chemicals that carry oxygen and external processes that can oxygenate the blood and return it to the body.
And there is also surgical “blood salvage”, where blood lost during surgery is filtered and returned to the body; as well as surgical techniques that strongly limit blood loss.
In any event, no longer using allogeneic blood has radically reduced the transmission of viral diseases, which means the biggest threat is bacterial contamination while taking the blood out or putting it back in.
Surgery and blood transfer are so prone to bacterial infection that typically antibiotics have to be used to prevent infection. But these can also destroy “good” bacteria, creating the chance for bad, opportunistic infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
All told, there is so much going on here that eventually it is hoped that there will be little if any need for allogeneic blood transfusions, except for very rare blood *components*. Which is probably a very good thing.
oh....and no testing.....that would be profiling and bigoted.....
If you need surgery, donate your own blood ahead of time.
Can you request “straight” blood or is that homophobic?
I would love to visit Germany but with their blood bank rules, I will pass on a visit !
This is politically correct medical insanity.
The time from infection with HIV to antibody detection is 4 to 6 weeks and in rare cases months. Thus if an infected individual gives blood in this 4 to 6 week period his blood can have the HIV virus in it but not enough antibodies to be detected. The odds of getting HIV from a gay mans blood and or IV drug user is 3.7 times greater than from non gay even though the blood has been screened. There is absolutely no reason that a patients risk must be 3.7 times greater when receiving blood. This is madness!!!!

Each homosexual or lesbian should give at least a gallon of blood.
Great idea, but only to each other! Let pestilence do what the government won't.
God Almighty Himself says: " If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."
So let them give blood to one another.
This would make ‘designated’ donation far more popular. I.e., you can give your own blood pre-surgery for your surgery or your spouse/kids/family/friends could donate specifically for you. But what about an emergency? The whole thing is too creepy and one has to wonder about the medical association that is promoting this.
Of course you don't and you would not care from whom the blood came if it were untainted and you needed it to save your life. The problem with homosexual males giving blood is that there is a small window between the initial infection with the HIV virus and a positive screening test. During that time, blood which tested negative could transmit the infection. Despite what politically correct liberals say, those most likely to be infected with the virus have had sexual contact with one of two groups - bisexual and/or homosexual males or IV drug users. These two groups are (or have been) engaging in high risk behavior and should be rightly banned from donating blood.
Zeugma is working on his 5th gallon of donated blood. I'm willing to do my part. We don't need the extra risk.
You can’t even give blood if you visited Europe in the 80s because of the .00000000000001% chance of mad cow disease.
I pointed out that I keep kosher and would never have come close to eating infected meat, but that doesn’t matter.
It used to be that if you had even traveled to Africa over the past couple of years, you couldn't donate, and everybody understood perfectly well that it wasn't a case of political discrimination against Africa travelers or a denial of their "rights". Politics is going to kill people here. Again.
Keep the blankets ON. please ...
