What is your favorite all time cover song? Some folks say a song can never be improved from the original presentation, but there are several cases I say disprove that theory.

Shinedown does a decent rendition of Simple Man.

Patti Page recorded "Tennessee Waltz" in 1950. As far as I know, the first version was by Pee Wee King & His Golden West Cowboys, from 1948, and it can be heard here.

I'd never heard that, thanks.

I've been looking for a video clip of the original Dylan song in the movie of Pat Garret and Billy the Kid. It always hit me as a really poignant scene. Slim Pickens who was the renegade sheriff (or deputy) was shot and he went to die sitting by the river outside his home. His wife came and sat near him as they accept the end. It puts the song in perspective when you realize it was written for this scene. Here's a short clip

Elvis Presley covered only one song by the Eagles. Presley may have been a fine performer, and this is one of his better recordings, but in my humble opinion, the original by the Eagles was better.

Zevon covered that on his album The Wind, which he put together after he'd been diagnosed as terminal. Curiously, the jewel in the crown of that album was the song, Keep Me In Your Heart For A While, which was itself covered admirably by Liliana Rose:

Diana Krall singing Burt Bacharach's The Look of Love. I know, I know - the performance was at the WhiteHouse (Obama), but it was a great concert.

Here's an interesting cover of "Let's Go Slumming":

I don’t know if it’s possible to outdo the Yardbirds “Heart Full of Soul”, but Chris Isaak gives it a good shot.

. . . . . Cochrane’s “Summertime Blues”. .

yes, from 'Live at Leeds" - You can't have too much volume when you play that record - I like to rattle the windows and floors on that.
