Drunk Men More Likely to Drown: Study
The Local (Sweden) ^ | 20 Jun 13

Men are twice as likely as women to drown, according to a new study, with middle-aged men with alcohol in their bodies posing the greatest risk.

Swedish addicts could get glass 'free zone' (19 Jun 13) Wine pulled because it was 'too good': supplier (14 Jun 13) Swedish governor shows cheap wine fit for a king (27 May 13)

"It was surprising that there were so many, many more men. It raises many questions, said Johanna Gustavsson, lecturer in risk management at Karlstad University and one of the study authors, to the Dagens Nyheter (DN) daily.

The study considered 4,000 cases of drowning between 1997 and 2011 and, excluding confirmed cases of suicide, men account for 80 percent of fatalities.

"We don't know why this is, but a guess is that men are more inclined to take risks," Gustavsson told DN.

These risks include driving boats without life jackets and a higher incidence of alcohol use.

According to the study, every second male drowning victim has alcohol in his body, rising to 65 percent among those in the 45-64 age group.

The main risk group has previously been children and young people, a situation mirrored in many other parts of the world. But this has now changed and older people are now at the most risk, according to the study.

"Grandchildren should tell their granddad to put on a life jacket when he goes out fishing," Gustavsson said.

Overall there has been a dramatic decline in the number of fatalities from drowning, with the death toll halving since the turn of the century. Despite the development the researchers called for a national information programme to prevent accidents.

"There are (programmes) for traffic, workplace security and fires, so it also feels necessary to prioritize this area," Gustavsson said.

The study shows that around 150 Swedes currently die from drowning every year.

Women are more buoyant than men. Greater percentage of body fat (which floats), lower percentage of muscle and bone (which sink).

That can’t be considered true since no tax money was used in reaching that conclusion.

In my old hometown of La Crosse, Wisc. several years ago there was a rash of drownings of young, male, college students most of whom late at night or early morning walked out of one of the many downtown bars situated a few blocks from the Mississippi River, staggered down to the river, fell into the river, and drowned. Finally some concerned citizens started posting unofficial patrols close to the river and the cops started taking more notice as well. So many drowned, many people thought there was a serial killer pushing the students into the water.

The police managed to stop a few students heading for the river and attempted to turn them around and make them walk back to their college dorms in the other direction. A number of these students swore they were headed towards their dorms despite being only yards from the edge of the river. One young male was pulled out of the river by some passersby after stumbling into the water accidentally. He was one of the few who managed to fall in and survive only because there were people around. He was so drunk, he did not remember falling into the water. Once in the water, the river is very swift and very cold (except for a few summer months for the latter.) It would take a very strong (and sober) swimmer to be able to survive falling in during the cold weather months.

Why do men drink more than women? Because they need to.

I think this is because women have natural flotation devices that keep them afloat.

And this study cost how much? Or was it performed by government employees who would have had to be paid anyway?

And conversely sober women are more likely find drunk men are asses.

Isn't there a country song about that? "Don't come home a'drinkin' with lovin' on your mind" or something like that?

As someone who nearly drowned near the Delaware River Water Gap while drunk 35 years ago, I can believe this. I can’t believe they needed a study to determine this!

Isn’t there a country song about that?

Found it:

Well you thought I’d be waitin’ up when you came home last night
You’d been out with all the boys and you ended up half tight
But liquor and love that just don’t mix leave a bottle or me behind
And don’t come home a drinkin’ with lovin’ on your mind
No don’t come home a drinkin’ with lovin’ on your mind

Just stay out there on the town and see what you can find
Cause if you want that kind of love well you don’t need none of mine
So don’t come home a drinkin’ with lovin’ on your mind

[ steel - guitar ]

You never take me anywhere because you’re always gone
Many a night I’ve laid awake and cried dear all alone
And you come in a kissin’ on me it happens every time
No don’t come home a drinkin’ with lovin’ on your mind
No don’t come home a drinkin’...
No don’t come home a drinkin’ with lovin’ on your mind

Only 150 drown per year in Sweden? Maybe because it isn’t very easy to drown on ice.

I was going to mention the built-in flotation devices, but decided against it.

I have to admit that I too rejected "flotation devices." "Buoyant" sounded safer.

Now we're both sunk.

That’s because the Swedish women sunbath nude upstream across the fjord from the brewery.
