MCGREGOR, Minn. (KMSP) -
A woman was attacked by a 190 lb. black bear in northern Minnesota on Monday night after her dog chased after its yearling cubs.
According to the Minnesota DNR, the 72-year-old McGregor, Minn., woman was bitten and clawed, but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The incident began when the woman let her golden retriever outside after checking to make sure the bears, which had been seen on the property for several days, weren't around. After letting the dog out, three young bears unexpectedly ran out from under the deck and the dog to chase dafter them.
By the time the woman reached the bottom of her deck stairs, the mother bear appeared.
"Obviously, she was shocked and surprised when she got down to the bottom of the deck and the sow bear was there," said Maj. Phil Meier, with the DNR.
The sow initially went after the dog, but turned her attention to the woman after she yelled for her dog to return.
"This bear did act aggressively," Meier said. "It not only knocked the woman down one time, it retreated a little bit and came back and bit her again."
The bear clawed at the woman's left arm and side during the first lunge. When it attacked a second time, it bit her on the right arm and leg. The woman was able to get to the phone and call 911 around 7 p.m.
Although she was hospitalized with numerous puncture wounds to her arms and legs, the woman is now recovering at home and said she is thankful to be alive.

An Aitkin County deputy couldn't find the bears near the property, but a DNR officer later found them about 200 yards away from the home.

I've heard the meat is pretty decent. Ever taste it? And, BTW, if you are lucky enough to harvest one, save the gall bladder. They are highly prized in Oriental medicine. Just google up a Korean trading company to make you an offer. Keep it in the freezer in one of those huge thick zip-lock bags until they send someone to pick it up.
If he gets one, I guarantee he’ll love it. Effortless for the human, & gives the dogs a great workout. [I’ve bought jewelry from Hong Kong, & I wondered how they managed to ship it so cheaply. Thanks for answering that question while you were at it.]
haha, I love goldens too, just not a fan of wee dogs.
Cop couldn’t find the dog so he shot the sow instead, then stomped the cubs to death he will be reprimanded however for failing to taze and handcuff the old lady.
She was a female with cubs.
Besides, the woman was dressed provactively.
Toilet paper? I always heard they used rabbits fot that purpose

You need a half lab like mine. He’ll chase the ball all day long (he can’t resist the urge) but he stops bringing it back after two throws. He chases it down and leaves it there, if you want to throw it again, go get it yourself
Dad and I shot one once.....just once. :-) Never again.
It was tearing up the blueberry barrens on the family farm (nothing worse than a bear for that, they just destroy them) so we took care of the problem. Jeez, the thing stunk to high heaven (Dad had some idea of a bearskin rug...hahaha yeah right), weighed a dammed ton, and was the hardest drag out that I've ever done. Bears are solid....S-O-L-I-D....so not only do you need to deal with all the weight, there's not a dammed thing to grab on to.
Never again. I know plenty of other people who will hunt them, but not me.

I had a big black bear walk into my mile strong fencer used around a 300 feet of garden. He just kept walking and stretched the wire out into the woods.

Tends to make them get shocked on a tender part.
Its very illegal to sell or trade bear parts only the hide can be sold.
They come into Duluth all the time, expecially in the fall. And Duluth has been there for 150 years.
My buddy has a place in N. Minnesota. He has a vegetable garden. The deer love it. He put up an electric fence around it and maybe used a quarter mile of wire. He hooked up to a 15 mile fencer.
They blow right through it.
Again... peanut butter. The most curious will let out such an alarm that the others with her/him won’t come back for weeks.
Lol. I really can’t see how that wd be any fun. What use is his Lab half, if he won’t retrieve? My dog’s other half is mostly pit bull—not known as the world’s foremost fetchers. Her Lab half takes over when she sees a ball, though, & she will retrieve it even if it gets stuck in shrubbery. [She’s built like a Sherman tank on four legs; she will ram the shrubs till the ball falls down.}
My brother is an avid bear hunter, and they are plentiful in northern Wisconsin. He and his family have harvested several, so I have been able to partake of bear meat on a number of occasions.
I am sure, that as with any meat, much depends on how it is prepared, cared for, and cooked.
One meal of perhaps a dozen was a bit "gamey" but most were similar to decent roast beef.
Most of them (as I recall) were cooked in a pressure cooker as a stew, or as a roast.
