The worlds population will reach almost eleven billion by the end of the century because of soaring birth rates in Africa, according to new research. The latest projection is about 800 million - eight percent - more than a previous UN forecast of 10.1 billion issued in 2011.
Researchers had expected fertility on the poorest continent where a woman will give birth to an average of 5.2 children in her lifetime, to fall more quickly than it has.
The current African population is about 1.1 billion and it is now expected to reach 4.2 billion, nearly a fourfold increase, by 2100.
Professor Adrian Raftery, of the University of Washington, said: 'The fertility decline in Africa has slowed down or stalled to a larger extent than we previously predicted, and as a result the African population will go up.'
A study last year found shifting population trends mean one in three children born by 2050 will be African.

Jeb Bush would say they were fertile.
No, it won’t. There’s no way they can produce enough food to feed that many.
The populations of most civilized nations are top heavy. Meaning there are significantly more older people then younger. The younger generation will not be able to support the economies necessary to care for the older generations.
By about 2040 the populations of most countries will see a significant decline as people die.
Little green crackers
Paging Bill & Melinda Gates....
African population will rise then fall dramatically when the next killer STD comes along and wipes out 1/2 the population before a cure can be found.
There’s no changing the nature of some races and societies. Their propensities will be their demise.
I disagree. But I respect your thoughts and views. The majority of starvation in Africa is because of political neglect or parental neglect. The planet can produce food for double or triple the population.
Prosperity bring low birth rates.
Yes, but you assume they can pay for that food to be produced? I don’t care where one is, fuel and seeds aren’t free, much less transporting goods from field to market.
The planet can produce much more food. True. The global economy? Not so much.
My thought exactly. Of course, it will be up to us to feed the starving masses.
“The majority of starvation in Africa is because of political neglect or parental neglect”
And there is absolutely no reason to assume that will change. Africa will win again.
I have to assume they are using "normal" birth rates taken from "normal" countries. Africa can hardly be considered "normal" under the standards of a civilized society.
Tribal warfare, genocide and starvation rule that country and will certainly keep the population boom under control....
Nope , African has built in population controls ,called Leaders of Government
Well either they’re all going to starve to death, die of AIDS, be trampled under by climate change and annihilate each other in wars, or reproduce and multiply up to 11 billion. Which is it?
The African population would be half it's size (if not smaller) if Western nations did not prop up Africa with medicine and aid. But for that medicine diseases in Africa would have eliminated a larger percentage of the population as they had before the introduction of Western medicine; and but for Western aid and food more Africans would have died of starvation. People may think it's great that more Africans now survive, but that also means less resources per capita for Africans and far more Africans being born into dire poverty.
Not without high inputs of petroleum derived fertilizers and insecticides, not to mention vast amounts of water.
There is some question whether there will be enough petroleum based products to use for this purpose. Also, is there is an upper limit to how far you can ‘augment’ the natural productivity of soil. Then there is the issue of water, which also requires vast amounts of energy to move around.
Then there is the question of capital to pay for all these things. Will the Chinese pay for it all? If so, at what price to Africans?
The Democrats will fix this.....one way or another.
There is no way WE can produce enough food to feed them.
The population of Africa has skyrocketed over the past 30 years because of all the money raised and sent to feed the starving.
