Conrad Farnsworth built a nuclear reactor in his dad’s garage. But when it came to making the International Science and Engineering Fair, there was a bit of a meltdown.

He was disqualified from attending because he entered into one too many science fairs in the wrong order, news reports say. …

Farnsworth is one of only 15 high-school students to ever achieve nuclear fusion, and the first person to do so in the state of Wyoming. …

I believe you’re right. In 1955 they just swooped in and confiscated the exhibit. My husband was not the kind of student who really through himself into contests and such, but he was bummed — expecially because they wouldn’t tell him why. I think they talked to the teacher, and my husband was given some generic excuse such as “exhibit too close to classified material.”

My husband went on to become a successful engineer with a number of patents to his name. Nobody confiscates his exhibits any more.

If he created nuclear fusion in his garage, how is it that his garage, neighborhood and city are still standing?

I don’t think it’s a good idea to tick off a kid capable of building his own nuclear device.

Huge difference between a few atoms of fusion and a few pounds of it.

What energy source did he use to fuse a few atoms?

It looks like electricity. I didn't dig far enough into the page to see what fusion reaction is taking place.

Any relation to Philo Farnsworth? Supposedly he created a fusion generator, too.

From the article, it sounds like the director had somebody else in mind to go to the world’s science fair.

Sounded that way to me, too.
