The inference being of such things as lunar cycles and ‘the fairer sex’, as they used to say. So, by day 36-plus from May Day, “something” should have happened, ergo Old Maid’s Day.

It would be rather difficult for me to hug my kitty, as I put her down and buried her in her favourite outdoor spot yesterday afternoon.
It’s a nice idea, but somewhat impractical now.
