Doctor Who star Matt Smith is to leave his role as the Doctor at the end of this year, the BBC has announced.
After four years as the Time Lord on the BBC One show, viewers will see Smith's Doctor regenerate in the 2013 Christmas special.
The 30-year-old actor said working on the show had been "the most brilliant experience".
Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary in November with a special episode, which Smith has already filmed.
The BBC said Smith's "spectacular exit" was yet to be revealed and would be "kept tightly under wraps".
Smith first stepped into the Tardis as the 11th Doctor in 2010. Taking over from David Tennant, he was the youngest actor to play the role.
Speaking after the announcement, he said he was "incredibly proud" of what the show had achieved over the last four years under Steven Moffat, the show's lead writer and executive producer.
Smith also thanked fans around the world for their "truly remarkable" dedication to the show.

I sort of backed into being a fan.
In the 60s and 70s when the original was shown on PBS, I didn’t always live in areas that had PBS. So, I just never got interesting in the original Dr. Who.
A few years ago, I watched a short-lived series, Special Unit 2. It was of the Men in Black genra, policing aliens. Then, I read of Torchwood, which was similar, so I watched it. Torchwood has numerous references to Dr. Who, so I got a general idea of what Who was about.
Then, SciFi Channel was running the ‘new’ Who with Eccleston. I started watching then, continued with Tennant, and Smith.
I also liked the childrens’ version called The Sarah Jane Adventures. Years earlier, Sarah Jane Smith, played by Elisabeth Sladen, was a companion and appeared with several of the old Doctors.
Torchwood was often truly awful.
I like the way The Doctor occasionally goes off without the companions. He visited Craig a couple of times and informed him that the baby wants to be called “Stormageddon, dark lord of all”. LOL
The first episode with Amy as a little girl was pretty funny.

They should have kept the “Mouth of Sauron” segment intact for the theatrical release. It is one of the highlights of the longer Director’s cut.
He’s already said he’s not interested.
Oh bother,,, well anyway I’d still like to see a serious Doctor. These last two were like hyperactive adhd blokes binging on red bull.
My daughter is a Dr. Who fan. I just read her a bit of this thread, and she said ‘where did you hear that’. I told her FreeRepublic. ‘I thought that was nerd stuff and politics’. I had to explain that FR is like pintrest, but for cool people.
Here is my guess. The next Doctor will be black. I think there
are some good black British actors.
That’s been talked about for a while. However if it’s a woman it would be a total PC disaster that may doom the show.
Re the woman thing. I’d think that would be difficult
to reconcile with River Song.
Just found this out... Doctor Who premiered on BBC the day after JFK’s assassination, Nov. 23, 1963.
