Matt Smith to leave Doctor Who at the end of year

Doctor Who star Matt Smith is to leave his role as the Doctor at the end of this year, the BBC has announced.

After four years as the Time Lord on the BBC One show, viewers will see Smith's Doctor regenerate in the 2013 Christmas special.

The 30-year-old actor said working on the show had been "the most brilliant experience".

Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary in November with a special episode, which Smith has already filmed.

The BBC said Smith's "spectacular exit" was yet to be revealed and would be "kept tightly under wraps".

Smith first stepped into the Tardis as the 11th Doctor in 2010. Taking over from David Tennant, he was the youngest actor to play the role.

Speaking after the announcement, he said he was "incredibly proud" of what the show had achieved over the last four years under Steven Moffat, the show's lead writer and executive producer.

Smith also thanked fans around the world for their "truly remarkable" dedication to the show.

The last show of the season showed John Hurt as Dr Who but I don’t think that means he will be “The” Dr.

I think he will be a recurring character as an echo.

That would be Sylvester Mccoy. Or Eccleston who sounded more like a miner from down the pit than an aristocratic scientist/traveler.

His exit had been rumored for several months.

He did alright, once I got used to him.

In a former thread, we were speculating as to possible replacements.

I would like to see Andrew Lee Potts give it a try. I sort of watched him grow up in the Primeval series.

I always thought the Doctor regenerating was a neat way to keep the series going.

They all have British accents, so to a southerner like me, they all sound aristocratic.

But I hate the way the current Doctor acts like he’s high on coke. Watching him wears me out.

It took a couple of episodes to warm up to him. I like his Doctor very much and will miss him.

I liked Primeval and pretty much all the main cast. My favorite soon became the bureaucrat Ben Miller.

I like Matt Smith.

David Morrisey who plays the governor on Walking Dead got to play a fake doctor once but says he’d like to take up the role for a few seasons.

On the other hand, John Hurt would be an interesting change.

I’m still broken hearted over the loss of Amy and Rory. It makes me wonder about Rory’s father Brian.

An established actor would never take on the role these days. They ask for a minimum three year commitment.

yes, David Morrissey at 48 would be an older Dr. Who than Smith was and also than Potts at 33 would be. time for an older looking Dr. Who. And could be a playback on his ‘fake dr role’ at some point as being reason for the regenerated Dr looking like the fake one from 19Century London.

It was just very odd to end the season with this scene but it was made even more confusing because it took place among the echos of all the past Doctors including some we've never seen.

My guess is that John Hurt will play the echo of the Doctor who killed his own race.

I liked Smith a lot. I guess I just get used to the different characters. I finished the last episode this morning and thought it was pretty decent. The echos of the high intelligence guy reminded me of The Mouth Of Sauron in LOTR.
