I am named after Robert the Bruce.
This is really a tremendous discovery!
You don’t find letters from the 1300’s everyday
Robert the Bruce. True King of Scotland.
I am a direct descendant of The Clan Ross and Hugh MacTaggart, 5th Earl of Ross. The Clan Ross fought beside Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn. Hugh MacTaggart 5th Earl (de) Ross was killed at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333.
Didn’t the Bruce’s hold titles in England also?
Very interesting.
& I thought our postal system was bad.
I know some Wallace’s that would piss on that letter.
by Robert Burns
Scots! wha hae wi' Wallace bled,
Scots! wham Bruce has aften led,
Welcome tae your gory bed,
Or tae victory!
Now's the day, and now's the hour;
See the front o' battle lour:
See approach proud Edward's power -
Chains and slaverie.
Wha will be a traitor knave?
Wha will fill a coward's grave?
Wha sae base as be a slave?
Let him turn and flee!
What for Scotland's king and law
Freedom's sword will strongly draw?
Freeman stand, or freeman fa'?
Let him on wi' me!
By oppression's woes and pains!
By your sons in servile chains!
We will drain our dearest veins,
But they shall be free!
Lay the proud usurpers low!
Tyrants fall in every foe!
Liberty's in every blow! -
Let us do or dee.
Robert the Bruce, my 21st great grandfather.
What’s with all the havering on this thread?
I don’t know anything about clans, plaids, family coats of arms, etc. and who did what to whom in the 1300s, etc. I remember being told as a child that I “make a better door than window” when standing in front of something, LOL.
I DO know my ancestors were cleared off the highlands, expelled from Scotland and put on what were called “funeral boats” because so many died on the journey to America.
We have done VERY well in the U.S. And yes, I am VERY proud of my Scottish heritage.
