A California man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after his pack of pit bulls attacked a 63-year-old female jogger, who later died of blood loss from some 200 puncture wounds.
Alex Jackson, 29, of Antelope Valley was booked on Thursday after his dogs, caught and impounded following the May 9 attack, tested positive to DNA belonging to victim, Pamela Devitt. He has also been charged with owner negligence, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.
Jackson was initially arrested shortly after Devitt was killed while out for a jog near her home in Littlerock, but was later released on bail pending the DNA test results. He is now being held on more than $1 million bail.
According to CBS News, Devitt was 'dragged 50 yards, scalped and her arm removed' by the dogs. The Los Angeles County Coroner later determined she died of 'blood loss attributed to sharp force trauma.'
'The sharp force trauma was caused by the dog attack in which the victim sustained approximately 150 to 200 puncture wounds,' said Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department Lt. John Corina.
Corina said a driver saw pit bulls attacking Devitt in the high desert community of Littlerock. The driver called 911 and honked her horn to try to get the dogs to stop.
Hours later, sheriff's and animal control officials served a search warrant on Jackson's home near the site of the attack and took away eight dogs, six pit bulls and two mixed-breeds.

Jacks are certainly the most efficient killing machines on the planet. My husband I are always saying that if they were the same size as our Dane, they would have to be put down.
A person should have some sense of a possible outcome of anything they do, especially if the dogs have already attacked somebody.
My neighbor had out of control rottweilers and dobermans.
He chose to move away.
These dogs ripped this woman’s arm off
How about squirrels???
We owned Rottweilers a few years back. Big, handsome dogs, loving and loyal to the family, vicious and unforgiving to strangers.
I'll never blame an animal for being an animal, for being true to its nature. It's an awful thing being attacked by dogs. I fear pit bulls, as much as some fear rottweilers, because I know their nature. But I don't blame the dogs. I do blame the owner for not having control of the animals.
Unless he purposely loosed the dogs on her.
He’s never caught any squirrels but they’re on his bucket list. Unfortunately he has caught raccoons.
Good idea.
This dog owner in the instant incident is little different from an arsonist:he created a highly dangerous siuation uncaring of the threat to others. And that he did not keep the vicious animals locked up after three other attacks is criminal negligence of the “f-u” type.
The very least charge I see fitting is that of VOLUNTARY manslaughter with aggravating circumstances.Plus multiple charges of harboring a known dangerous animal and failing to restrain same.Exactly how these charges would be phrased under California law is something I don’t know.
Yes, I know.
Some of the trends in how we deal with crimes trouble me, though. To me, murder is when you stick a gun to someone's head and pull the trigger, or stick a knife in them and kill them, or actually ORDER your dogs to attack someone with the intent of killing the person.
In other words, murder involves an intent to take the life of another person.
I would have a hard time convicting for murder here. I don't think the guy should remotely get off. I'm in favor of something like 25 years in prison. But I think murder is questionable, without the intent to take a life.
It took them three weeks to indict him — so I wonder what they found out during those three weeks. The owner may very well have kept them on the hungry side and turned them loose with the intent that they would find their own meal — and they did.
Sorry, skippy.
Second Degree murder at the least.
The lethal danger was foreseeable and the results almost certain, yet the clueless owner did not take precautions proportional to the threat.
Stupidity is not a defense.
The poor women should have been carrying a handgun with at least a 15 round mag and then...oh wait, this is California, she probably couldn’t carry and thus had to wait for the police to save her.........I blame the owner first(murder), the stupid citizens of the state second(denying the Right to Life and the absolute ability to defend it) and the dogs a distant third(cuz they are what they are—animals).
My wife’s JRT is psychotic. We have often wondered what she would be like at 100 lbs. Probably the most dangerous dog on earth. It would be like a wolverine that wants to protect you. We got a Doberman last year. he puts the Jack in her place. I think the doberman pinscher is about as close to a 100 lb JRT as you would ever want to get. I used to hate pitbulls but I just hate the bad pitbull owners these days. They take a potentially outstanding animal and ruin it. This guy deserves to go down for manslaughter at the very least IMO.
I hear a lot of “it’s the owner” crap from pit lovers. That’s fine. If you are willing to do the time for your dog’s crime. I think if more of these pitbull maulings ended with the owner behind bars we would see fewer pit types being bred.
Murder and “He has also been charged with owner negligence,”
Man, I’ll bet he sure is sweating that ‘owner negligence’ charge.
It reminds me of a movie where Gig Young was charged with murder. He was testifying. The judge says, “Be careful with your answers or I’ll find you in contempt of court!” Gig Young replied, “I am on trial for my life! What are you going to do? Take away my driver’s license?” ;-)
My buddy had a pit just like that one that weighed in over 100 lbs, and fortunately was very friendly. Dogs generally don’t scare me, and I’ve been around some very spooky Shepherd/Wolf hybrids and we got along fine.
This dog scared me.
Just goofing a little in the living room and he was absolutely manhandling his way around the place. His light play was most dogs full effort and my buddy had to keep a firm hand just to makes sure he didn’t get too rambunctious. I’m well over 200 lbs and he was pushing me around.
Have never seen such an insanely powerful, energetic, quick, and intense dog in my life. He literally could rip you to pieces if you wanted to.
