Bolstered by the hype generated for its spicy ketchup, Whataburger has decided to start bottling the stuff. The burger chain will partner with HEB stores to sell it this summer. They'll sell the regular ketchup and mustard as well, and they are introducing a new potato chip product called Whatafries.
The ketchup will come in 20-ounce bottles; the mustard will be in a 16-ounce bottle. According to Whataburger, its mustard is a "one-of-a-kind" recipe dating back to the 1950s.
They are dubbing Whatafries a potato chip version of the their French fries, and they are crowing about the fact that they're made from real potatoes. Those will be sold in 7.4-ounce bags.
In other condiment news, the spicy ketchup will graduate from its previous limited-edition status to become available permanently at every one of its 740-plus restaurants in its 10-state service area.
Whataburger has gotten a lot of mileage from its spicy ketchup. The restaurant chain first released the not-really-that-spicy? condiment in January 2012 for a limited time, which helped ramp up the furor. When it went away, customers did what they usually do these days: created a Facebook page. Whataburger reissued it in March 2013 which apparently resuscitated the enthusiasm sufficiently to persuade them to add it to the regular lineup.
As for the mustard, is it really one-of-a-kind? I can think of lots of mustards that are distinctive, but the Whataburger mustard doesn't seem that special.
Was that the Whataburger in C.C.? I only went there as a child with parents, probably during the early and mid ‘60s (lived a little closer to the Island). Now, I’m on a place, where we saw 39 below zero one night this last winter. Funny, what growing up in southeast Tex. and later doing infantry-related Army stuff in southern climates can do to some of us (chase us to the high, dry cold).
“Theres no reason why it shouldnt happen. McDonalds aint got nothin on Whataburger.”
Except for billions in the most choice commercial real estate locations.
Ok, they got that too.
My hometown is also Corpus Christi. In fact, I live here still. I would like to move somewhere nice and cold, though. I think we only had “winter” for about a week this year. Got down to around 50, felt really nice. Now it’s hot and humid again.
I’LL BUY YOUR HOUSE!! Yesterday was 49 degrees, 100 mph an hour winds and dark, dreary and plain Muslim like. (You close to a boat?)
This was in Aransas Pass, in the 60’s.
My grandpa owned an ice house (real ice house, not beer joint) on the Island, so I spend tons of time there. It is still on of my favorite places.
There is no way in hell that I would live anywhere that the temp got that low. Good darn thing I did not marry a military man. ;-)
Aransas Pass... We went floundering in some shallow water next to a channel there, when I was a kid (’60s—gigs, lanterns and the like).
True, the cold, windy winters up here are one of the downsides. The cold seems to hurt more, as we get older.
Try Weber’s if you like that. You might have to mail order it, but gooooooood stuff!
Okay, I will, thanks. Especially since it’s on Amazon, and cheaper. Wonder if it’s the same Weber?
That’s where I get my supply from, between deliveries from relatives in Buffalo.
