Champions League 2013: Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund fans take Wembley [2pm EDT FOX]

A sense of humour, as well as intent, has arrived in London with more than 180,000 German football fans descending on the capital for tonight’s Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

Alongside preparing for the biggest game in world club football, Dortmund were yesterday also handing out flyers with a picture of a red telephone box, a double-decker bus and a sunbed that was covered, almost inevitably, by a large beach towel.

“You were hoping for a final between two English teams,” it read. “Or at least for a stadium full of hot chics from Spain. But instead you get the Krauts. Have fun.”

The wider and more serious message, of course, concerns the shifting balance of power in European football. For one night at least, Wembley Stadium will be the home of German football.

Further into the future and there is good reason to wonder if this will be the start of a sustained period when Bundesliga clubs can consistently surpass the recent dominance of Spain’s La Liga and our own Premier League.

You know, if the Brits could somehow manage to redirect the energy of all those fans to ridding London of Muslim radicals....

The Champions League soccer trophy is displayed at Wembley Stadium in London, Friday May 24, 2013.

SO WHO'S GOING TO WIN? Judging by statistics, the team that scores the first goal. In this year's competition, 82 games have been won by the team that scores first, with only 15 come-from-behind victories.

Arjen Robben, the Dutch wing who had been roundly criticized for struggling in the biggest moments, starred in the most critical sequence of all, scoring the decisive goal for Bayern in the 89th minute and lifting the Bavarians to a 2-1 victory in front of a crowd announced at 86,298.

You got to feel happy for Robben, who finally came through after being a runner-up so many times in the past few years, with Bayern and the Dutch team.

Glad it was him and not that Muzzie Ribery scoring it.

I was glad when Ribery was taken out, he looked headed towards a red card.
