A tipster told Deadspin that ESPN is planning to lay off more than 400 employees today.
A source at ESPN confirmed to Deadspin that layoffs were planned, and while 400 seemed high, the number of layoffs will be "in the hundreds."
As Deadspin also points out, ESPN may need to cut costs because they have recently gotten rights to several live events (like the US Open Finals) which are very expensive.
ESPN gave us the following statement:
We are implementing changes across the company to enhance our continued growth while smartly managing costs. While difficult, we are confident that it will make us more competitive, innovative and productive.

Maybe this would be a good day for all the queer ESPN employees to come out of the closet...might save your job.
Well if ESPN is like 95% of other American companies then actually the productive people will be laid off first.
Most likely ESPN hired a lot of MBA positions like "Senior vice president for global support services, Director of Communications for the East Coast, Vice President of Mission Related Services, Vice President of Administrative Services, "Director of Diversity Affairs", etc.
The 1st rule MBAs learn is to protect their own, Unfortunately it is SOP of business to first lay off the productive workers while holding on to the high salary but produce little MBAs. American companies will continue this practice pretty much right up until they go out of business I'm afraid.
Looks like Erin Andrews made a wise move going to CBS Sports, especially since CBS has started it’s own sports channels.
I suspect some of the ESPN talent will end up there.
The on-air talent have contracts, so they are safe until they expire. After that, you can expect their pay to go down significantly, or not renewed.
I don’t know how Tony Kornhieser has managed to stay on. Most irritating sports guy on TV; even worse than Dicky V.
Running scared of Fox Sports 1 already. Cutting costs to try and outbid FS1 for big events.
Bread and circuses.
First they killed Hostess, and now ESPN?
Riots will happen...
But give them credit (I rarely do) - they have actually increased the profile of Chris Broussard - who many thought would be fired after his pro Christianity comments on Collin’s coming out....
Good. ESPN is as leftist as they come.
Fox is launching the Fox Sports 1 channel in August to compete directly with the Elitist Socialist Political Network. Fox plans to air live sporting events vs the liberal taped claptrap that the Bristol, CT klan broadcasts. I’m guessing Fox is undercutting their advertising and cable rates. Fox isn’t hindered by political correctness so the CT klan has to shed employees because they will be losing income.
You're kidding, right? PTI is the best show on ESPN consistently, with Neal Everett's SportsCenter and some Sports Reporters episodes close. I think Kornheiser is refershing change from all the super young super hipster super thin children they have on that network.
I thought Erin Andrews went to Fox (or did she move again)?
Trying to get under fifty to avoid Obamacare rules?
Screw FOX, they took what was a great racing channel and turned it into a reality channel for bottom feeders. They dumped the format that worked and now will have another run of the mill sports channel geared towards the person we at FR abhor, a six pack a day, fat, tated up, idiotic low information, when is payday, stick and ball sports fan.
There is so much stick & ball sports on tv now it is hard to find a channel that has anything else.
Brings to mind those in government employment during times of weather crisis. Nonessential personnel are directed not to come to work. If they're nonessential, why are they employed?
“Are the leftwing racists, Mike Greenberg and Steven A Smith included in layoffs?”
I’m hoping Jalen Rose is included. He was a whiny beotch at MI and has carried it through to adulthood. He’s the most racist person I’ve ever heard on TV and gets adulation for his ghetto attitude.
I forget which collegiate scandal was going on at the time, but when his response was something to the effect that wees godda get more of our people into the AD positions and college president positions to make sure change happens, I turned off ESPN and haven’t gone back.
I hope no Christ followers are hurt in this round of layoffs. I can see ESPN targeting Christians.
Massive layoffs always do. </sarcasm>
Major League Asskissers.
You are correct. My error.
They just lost English Premier League soccer to NBC.
