The Doors' founding keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, died in Germany Monday after a long fight with cancer, his publicist said in a statement. He was 74.
The artist had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer.
The Doors formed in 1965 after Manzarek happened to meet Jim Morrison on California's Venice Beach. The legendary rock group went on to sell 100 million albums worldwide, establishing five multiplatinum discs in the U.S
Morrison died in 1971, but Manzarek carried on The Doors' legacy, continuing to work as a musician and an author.

Morrison could be an alcohol fueled jerk, but when it came to the band I don’t think he was that way. I don’t think he demanded more money, and the songs were all credited to the entire band.
That is a GREAT cartoon! Thanks.
Manzarek was a great musician and a fabulously talented keyboard player. He was so great at what he did that the Doors didn't even need a bass player, because Manzarek handled the low end with his keyboard's foot pedals.
Fair winds and following seas, Ray.
His voice was different, but his vocals still turned out very well.
The Keyboard work on Light My Fire can only be described as Iconic.(possibly the only other iconic keyboard man from that era would be Garth Hudson ie. Chest Fever)
RIP Ray, you entertained me.
Thanks for your useless input.
STFU asshat. If you don’t care then don’t post or open. It’s really not that hard.. perhaps for you it is though.
I felt it fit the occasion perfectly! ;)
**** you .
Certainly his wife of 45 years Dorothy, their son, Pablo, and three grandchildren, Noah, Apollo and Camille.
But you are too cool for the room.
Manzarek is the guy who encouraged him to write, to practice, to get to the studio, to show up for performances.
If Manzarek hadn't taken that initiative, the band would have been a one-hit wonder.
Hmm. My previous post was inartfully drafted. My intent had been to comment to you about the post to which you had taken offense. It seemed so simple at the time.
LA Woman is my favorite Doors album. IMO, they were starting to mature as a band when they made that album.
Double **** !
I agree with wideawake. I’ve been a keyboardist (organ, synth and piano ) and was playing in bands since 1963...retired 1994 to take up diaconal studies at Providence College. Ray was not only an excellent writer/player, but also an innovator that changed the course of rock music. He inspired a whole new genre of players, including myself.
RIP, Ray
Dittos to what you said. One would think Manzarek wrote Light my Fire given the intense organ part. However Krieger wrote that one. Band liked it. Ray Manzarek goes off and rather quickly comes up with this Bach inspired intro. Rest is history.
Ray was a pioneer rock keyboard player and plowed the ground for many that followed. I really liked that guy and miss him.
Separate the Art from the artist. For instance, tomorrow is the bicentennial of the birth of Richard Wagner. He despised Judeo-Christianity influenced the Nazis with his racialist theories and celebrated pagan culture and carnal love in his operas. We still celebrate his music.
True. Why should we? Especially in the case of Wagner.
I’ve drawn the line at pop and classic rock, which is clearly a promoter of evil, in my view.
