I don't recall that novel, but that doesn't quite make sense, since more than a few individuals (besides Mitchell and Dr. Elizabeth Dehner) started acting like Zeroesque narcissistic gods (the SS Valiant crew).

From what I understand, the new villain in the movie has nothing to do with Mitchell (despite the new actress in the film being made over to look like Dehner, Mitchell's cohort) and this English actor is in fact, reprising a role made famous by the fella who hawked cars that had rich Corinthian leather.

It’s true. In fact since this is a alternate reality story (because the old original series Spock we knew in the last movie accidently caused the timeline to change trying to save Romulus) the Botany Bay was intercepted by Starfleet at a earlier time than when Kirk intercepted them in ‘Space Seed’. Also from almost every other review, this movie is getting a 4 out of 5 stars.

It was a while ago.....

I may have confused Mitchell with Trelane.
This was the book i believe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q-Squared

It appears that Trelane was a Q and our “Q” was tasked to mentor him......or whatever.

Just realized that Q-Squared is a non-canon Star Trek novel.

Keep in mind that the character is supposed to be Indian, used to be acted by a Mexican, and now it’s a Brit. Trek likes to get confused that way, Picard was French played by a Brit, which gives BBCAmerica a cheap excuse to show Next Gen any time they have an hour to kill.
