The Washington Redskins will NEVER change their name, insists owner as he breaks silence on 'racist' term
The owner of the Washington Redskins has insisted that the name of the team will never change despite growing controversy over its origins as a derogatory term for Native Americans.
Daniel Snyder told USA Today : Well never change the name. Its simple. NEVER.
The team has been under fire from some critics who say the term is a racial slur because of its origins in bounties placed on the scalps of Native Americans by British settlers.
The director of the National Museum of the American Indians has said the word redskin is equivalent to the n-word.
But Mr Snyder, who rarely speaks to the media, broke his silence on the name which has been with the team since 1937.
He told the paper: We will never change the name of the team. As a lifelong Redskins fan, and I think that the Redskins fans understand the great tradition and what its all about and what it means, so we feel pretty fortunate to be just working on next season. Well never change the name. Its that simple. NEVER you can use caps.
A recent Associated Press poll found that 80 per cent of Americans believed the Washington teams name should remain unchanged.
However that proportion dropped by ten per cent from ten years earlier when 90 per cent said the team should still be called the Redskins.
Critics of the name have launched legal action in a bid to dent the Redskins Federal copyright protection.
With everything that Native Americans have gone through in this country, to have a sports team named the Redskins - come on, now.

It’s tradition, damnit!
Never? I’m sure 10 years ago, people were saying that a Muslim Communist from Kenya would never be elected president.
If we can have Kenyan president we can have Redskins football team.
Is it okay if I still call them...”The Washington Scumbags”?
Exactly. The current owner won’t always be the owner and many staunch owners do relent when the pressures on.
Hallelujah for somebody with the guts to tell the scumbag Democrats to take their political correctness and go play in the street.
I believe that if the PC-police around DC and Maryland want to really make this an issue...the Redskins would be prepared to pack up and leave....for Virginia. There are several areas around Arlington that real estate developers have essentially left open and easily accommodate a massive stadium and parking lot.
The general thought locally now is that Maryland has a fair amount of liberal laws being floated. It wouldn’t take much to require the team name change and get it on the ballot. The team would use that to vacate the stadium deal they are locked into, and just skip right over DC to avoid continued confrontation.
I’ll even go out on the limb and predict by 2025...the team resides just across the river into Virginia....and Maryland kicking itself for losing the tax revenue the team generated.
The Redskins name is very offensive ... to white liberals. But it is all pretend offense.
The Washington Redskins were once the Boston Redskins. This name was chosen because there had been a tribe in the Boston area that used to paint themselves red while going into battle (during colonial times).
Was any of this true?
The PC commie lib crowd needs to give it up and leave “the ‘skins” alone. Go harass the farmers who grow red skin potatoes for a while.
The PC liberals can seriously go # themselves. Their idiotic, puritan goals are expunging an American heritage we’ve normally regarded as favorable to “native Americans”.
When oh when can we inflict the necessary hurt on the Left?
Like the n-word? Yet more than a few high schools on Indian reservations proudly call their teams “Redskins.” Google it.
Ignorance. Redskin does not refer to the skin color of a race of people. Rather, some Indian warriors before battle applied red ochre to their face and upper body as war paint.
It’s been years since the Skins have been offensive. That’s awesome! Now of they can just keep RG3 healthy and work on those darn defensive backs they might have a chance...
Gee, I always thought teams named themselves after something they admired. Should be an honor to have a team named after you.
My bad.
