I Need Your Prayers and Good Thoughts (Sad Update #206)
Myself | 5-08-2013 | Myself

Posted on 05/08/2013 6:25:18 PM PDT by Nowhere Man

I need some prayers and good thoughts since my mother was just diagnosed with breast cancer and we are just beginning to fight it. She goes for a PET scan tomorrow and also to an oncologist to get meds to shrink the cancer. She also has a good doctor, some friends and acquaintances have the same one and many women have kicked it with her help plus the doctors say, "don't worry, we have many ways to fight it." Many thanks to all.

That is great news! The chemo and radiation will be added assurance. Your mom sounds like a strong lady. :-)

Well, Mom has been home and I took her for a follow up today since she has a slight infection where they took the lymph nodes under her left arm. She’s got anti-biotics and the doctor says she is doing well. Mom also had two drainage bulbs on her but they removed one. We also saw the pathology report and according to that, when they tested the surrounding areas, it came out negative. However, she will need chemo and/or radiation to catch any possible cancer wandering about, inflammatory breast cancer is very aggressive. The tumor was 22.4 pounds, 11 inches long, about 9 inches wide and 5 or 6 inches thick. Hopefully is was self contained. She’s feeling very good.

This latest news sounds very hopeful, especially with the surrounding area testing negative and your mother feeling so well. It also sounds like her doctors are doing everything possible to help her win this battle. That is good news all-around!

Well, took Mom to the doctors, she got the last drain out but the incision still has to close in some places and she has a low grade infection. She is on anti-biotics and her temp is normal and she has a good appetite. She goes back Thursday. She is doing quite well, I know, because she is yelling at Ben “Rothlesbooger” and the Steelers for goofing up left and right. B-)

she has a good appetite .... she is yelling at Ben “Rothlesbooger” and the Steelers for goofing up left and right.

I'd say that's a sure sign that she is doing well. Based on your posts, your mom sounds like a strong lady who enjoys life. I will keep her in my prayers again tonight.

If you don't mind, I'd appreciate a prayer for my dear aunt, 73 years young, who also is a strong lady. She's in the hospital with a serious injury and a serious infection. Thanks in advance!

Well, an update, we got Mom on a vacuum pump for her wound and the nurse changes it twice a week. Also she is doing OK and the wound seems to be healing slowly. She will go on chemo and/or radiation after it heals as a precaution. I also got a part-time job, it ain’t much and doesn’t pay much but I need time to care for Mom. Also, I freelance, I do webpages and fix computers. I think really to survive in The Obamanation, you might have to create your own job.

Sorry, I’ve been away from the forum for a while, busy dealing with personal issues.

I’m glad to hear your mom continues to do well. It sounds like you’re doing well, too.

Well an update. Mom is going back on chemo again but she will get a second PET scan. She does have a few “satellite tumors” showing up, which was expected, given the type of cancer she has. The breast doctor had Mom’s tumor genetically tested. Mom is part of a study where they have a handful of drugs that are genetically tuned to her type of cancer. Actually, you could say Mom was drafted, not volunteered for it, but I’m glad anyways. The breast surgeon with the oncologist will then start her on a new drug that just can out a few days ago and see what happens.

I’m sorry to hear that your mom must go through chemo again, but I’m glad to hear that her doctors caught the other tumors and are treating her. It’s also good news that she qualifies to be treated with a new drug. I will pray again for your mom tonight. Thank you for the update.

Thanks. It sounds like they are doing much the same thing as that one woman did in a Freepmail I got to where she was able to beat it. I’ve seen some other stories where people can manage it for years as well, one woman got it in 1980 and was on chemo off and on for the last 33 years.

The type of cancer (IBC) your mother has can be very tricky. But, the success stories are encouraging. I believe I freepmailed you one of those success stories. It was about a woman who happened to be treated by my oncologist around 10 years ago, and she’s still around to tell the tale. So, keep hope alive!

Yeah, we are going for a PET scan first and then the chemo will start. We will check tomorrow to see if it is scheduled since we are eager to get into this fight.

Well, quick update, Mom goes to the pet scan tomorrow and then she goes to the breast doctor. I do have one setback though, her appetite has been poor, she ate some on the last week but the last day or two, hardly anything at all although I think she started to get some of it back tonite. I gave her two servings of lime jello and a big piece of cake that she gobbled down. She is a bit weak though and I think she will need rehab to build up again. She did have a fall where she banged her knee but is otherwise OK. I’m wondering if she got some sort of flu too, I recently started a new part time job and God knows what I can drag home. Heck, I feel a bit of the runny nose myself. It has been hard being a caregiver. Mom is still determined to fight like Hell but this is just a setback. I guess that happens from time to time. If the doctor wants to put her in the hospital for a few days for rehab and to get her appetite going, that will be OK as long as it gets her going so we can start the chemo soon to get rid of these satellite tumors.

Thank you for the update. When your mother doesn’t feel like eating, a milkshake or other special drink (like Ensure) might help give her the nutrients she needs. Unfortunately, so many of those drinks are loaded with sugar. Some cancer patients drink vegetable juice that family members prepare using a juicer.

I’ll be praying for your mom and you.
