Keeping Portland "weird" has become a major preoccupation. There's even a TV show dedicated to it: Grimm (which is actually pretty funny if you start with the "Weird Portland" concept.)

The last time I flew in there I was greeted by an amazing display of Dykes on lavender-decorated Harley Bykes showing off and styling for out-of-state rubes like me. If San Francisco is about gay men, Portland (and Oregon) is about lesbian women.

And who can forget the coin-operated 24 Hour Church of Elvis that dispenses strange "fortunes" and other trivia when you punch in up to a dollar's-worth of quarters? That's only one of innumerable "weird" attractions in the city, which also has great food, a world-class rose garden and other non-weird attractions.
