East About To Be Overrun By Billions Of Cicadas
Associated Press ^ | May 6,2013 | Seth Borenstein

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Any day now, billions of cicadas with bulging red eyes will crawl out of the earth after 17 years underground and overrun the East Coast. The insects will arrive in such numbers that people from North Carolina to Connecticut will be outnumbered roughly 600-to-1. Maybe more.

In 83/4 Santa Anna CA, the Vietnamese restaurants were nailed after many locals reported their anklebiters missing. No joke. No prosecution either...on cultural grounds if memory serves.

Cicadas are cool critters, their only flaw is that they don’t eat democrats.

Perhaps they can be trained.

They came up here a few years ago. We had to skip going to our lake house for a couple of weeks. Too noisy to sleep and there are so many laying around dead, the woods smelled like rotting gizzard goop.

I despise bugs-—to a phobic degree.

I’m not looking forward to this. Wonder if it’s too late to dig a bunker?

Nah. Just move to Texas. We use them for fish bait.

Several years ago a local teacher cleaned up on the show.

That was pretty cool.

Not nice critters:

They are perfectly harmless and very cool to watch, IMHO.

I recall years ago playing golf in Western PA when they hatched. The 1st hole was wide open in a meadow, but at the 2nd hole you went back into the woods to get to the tee box. I heard them even before we got into the woods. I thought it was some big pump with bad bearings the screech was so loud.

But when we got back into the woods there were thousands of them hanging from the trees coming out of their shells.

I thought it was really cool to see. They don't bite, they don't destroy anything, they just hatch, mate and then die leaving a meal for some other critter.

A friend who lives in WI near the Hmong population said a *lot* pets went missing when they moved in.

We had “17-year locusts” in Chicagoland. Are these the same insects? If so, why are then not on the map?

I googled Ibizan Hounds. Aw, so cute!

You’re right, though...I don’t like that crazy flying around. Haven’t since a huge moth flew into my face when I was a teenager.

Hello, phobia!
