Associated Press ^ | May 6,2013 | Seth Borenstein

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Any day now, billions of cicadas with bulging red eyes will crawl out of the earth after 17 years underground and overrun the East Coast. The insects will arrive in such numbers that people from North Carolina to Connecticut will be outnumbered roughly 600-to-1. Maybe more.

I was much more subtle so that my victims went unawares.

Now this is what I was thinking. Lots of different broods on different cycles. I hear these things every year in the
SE. We also have tree frogs yacking away each year too.

Well, they’re bugs, they look alien and they’re unpredictable and unreasonable.

[the last two traits are common to Ibizan Hounds so I’ve grown numb to such things]

Growing up in North Texas, my brother and I would catch them and tie a string around their head, just behind the eyes. Turn them loose and they fly around as you “walk” them like a pet.

...I was 10 in 1950 and it was a few years later, about 1952 when they swarmed in MD.

This type is the 17 year version and the last one was in 1996. The 2004 hatching in the DC/Maryland area was a different variety, although they were just as bothersome.

A month or so ago, in the very early morning hours, somebody was being interviewed on TV from their home via Skype...in the background was the open door to the kitchen.

There was a stroll-through the kitchen by a fambly member in his undies, scratching his bung.

Not a peep from the TV interviewer...

"I am a wellspring of pointless trivia."

That's what we used to call a teacher decades ago? ;-)

Come think about it, how does the board of health grade a Chinese restaurant? Every time they find something crawling around the place they claim it is on the menu......

I once lived in an apartment above an Asian restaurant.

I’d sit on the flat roof outside my place and watch the rats come and go.

Somedays, they seemed to come but never went.

That was in the early 80’s and I haven’t eaten Asian food since.
