Suicide rates among middle-aged adults rose by nearly 30% over a 12-year period, the CDC reported.
From 1999 through 2010, the annual age-adjusted suicide rate among those 35 through 64 rose from 13.7 to 17.6 per 100,000 population, the agency reported in the May 3 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
The 28.4% increase -- statistically significant at P<0.001 -- was accompanied by changes in the mechanism of suicide.
While firearms remained the most common method, the proportion of suicides by suffocation or poisoning grew more quickly over time, the agency reported, based on data from the National Vital Statistics System.
In 2009, the annual rate of suicide by gun was 7.2 per 100,000, which rose 14.4% to 8.3 per 100,000 in 2010.
But suffocation suicide mainly by hanging rose 81.3%, from 2.3 to 4.1 per 100,000. And poisoning mainly by drug overdose rose 24.4%, from 3.0 to 3.8 per 100,000.
The increase in suffocation as a method is worrisome, the agency noted, because most attempts using that method result in death.
The CDC reported last year that suicide had overtaken motor vehicle accidents as the most common cause of injury deaths in the U.S.

Somebody whose is pushing 60 years old might just conclude that he is too old to start again and that there is no point in trying.
When one gets to be middle aged, they are finally waking up to the lies our government is spinning.
Yes. And mature enough to see that there is nothing can be done about now.

Just wait till ObamaCare kicks in. Life will be very cheap.
Indeed. Without Christ, I don’t know how I could go on. When you see your home foreclosed and your job exported and your retirement savings stolen, only faith in Christ makes it worth getting up and starting over.
I wonder if they added the category of “suicide by cop”, the numbers might be even higher. Folks figure out that if they can die and still not default the life insurance policy, at least their family can cash in at their passing.
Of course, none of this concerns the Gangsta-in-Chief. More of us who off ourselves means fewer to burden the state. That’s what Obamacare is all about — death.
It’s the psych meds...
Bump, for hopefully more readers.
Not quite.
So you think it’s guns?
False choice.
Of course it’s guns. If there were no guns, there’d be no suicide.
I believe that “in the commission of a criminal act” voids many life insurance policies.
Very glad you’re sticking by Christ! Still a tough row to hoe — getting up each morning, going about your business — but having a Divine Inspiration makes all the difference in the end!
“Of course its guns...”
I figured. That was the only other significant thing that changed was psych meds - but I’m not surprised that some people blame guns.

Anyone care to help me out, what is the above trying to say?
What am I missing?!
He’s saying it’s better for other methods to be tried, because they have a lower death rate. Suffocation death rate is high(est?)
I’m not sure what I’m saying, except that psych drug use has EXPLODED just as suicides have significantly climbed. Some blame the increase in gun ownership - I don’t - I blame the drugs.
