Slayer guitarist and founding member Jeff Hanneman died earlier today of liver failure. He was 49.

"Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home," the band's longtime publicist said in a statement. "Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure."

Hanneman co-founded the thrash metal greats with Kerry King in 1981; their breakthrough came in 1986 with the brutalist album "Reign in Blood." Hanneman wrote or co-wrote the set's standout tracks, "Angel of Death" and "Raining Blood."

Hanneman is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry.

Nah, Hanneman’s a metal dude. You’ll just have to wear ripped jeans and a Venom t-shirt.

How did the Billboard staff kill him again?

Maybe with an honest review.

It was around 2011-2012 that he was hospitalized for all the complications around this spider bite so it is certainly possibly there could have been drinking or other issues that proved to be the fatal tipped point.

It originated with a spider bite that wrecked havoc on his body, prevented touring etc. and caused the flesh eating disease necrotising fasciitis,

Awful, and more reason for me to hate spiders.

Somewhere around I still have Slayer tapes and albums including Haunting the Chapel and Hell Awaits.

49’s a bad age to go for a rocker. Too old to be remembered as a “tragic loss”, and too young to have enjoyed the fruits of “living legend” status.

I’m pretty sure they do bring them back... on PBS every time they need to raise some cash.

Actually they served their country. When we were breaking the Jiahidis after 9/11 we would keep then awake all night by cranking up slayer.

Like total bummer, man. Dude didn’t even show up on the recent underrated musicians thread! Talk about being underrated. And dead.

Awful music. If you can even call it music.

I was in my early thirties when this band hit big. Even though I loved heavy metal and hard rock (and bashed a fair guitar myself), I never gave them a listen because they had that 'thrash rock' thing about them.

I would bet any rapper would serve the same purpose. It all sucks. Just my opinion.

Actually some of the younger Jihadis like rap. No surprise. Death metal...not so much.

I heard an ad on the radio today for Black Sabbath. Apparently the original band has reunited for a tour.
I saw them twice in 1971 and they were awesome concerts for a teenager back then.

But that was then.

I was pointing out the valuable service they’d done on behalf of this country. I’m sorry that anyone dies at 49 whether from a spider bite or through the scourge of alcoholism. A malady which I have. ....so I’m not judgmental not about it like others on this board. It’s cunning ,baffling and powerful and you can’t explain it to someone ego doesn’t have it. That said my musical tastes include punk and fast rock. So I’m familiar with speed metal
and I’m sure he made a lot of money but as a genre it appeals to strange angry young man and it sux. If you sit at home listening to Slayer you have problems and you taste in music is really bad. So go get that acne attended to.

I was lucky enough to see Heaven and Hell just before Ronnie died. It was Black Sabbath version two, so I was totally pleased with that, but never got to see the original lineup, though I did see Ozzy many, many times. I’m not going to Tokyo Ozzfest this month, but hope to see Sabbath when they get their tour together after Tony recovers.
