PTA's 'White Trash Wednesday' angers Federal Way parents

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- An electronic sign out front welcomes visitors to Sunnycrest Elementary School in the Federal Way School District; what it doesn't mention is that next week is "Teacher Appreciation Week" - and that this year's effort's aren't exactly getting an A grade from parents in the neighborhood.

"Wow. You're kidding, right?" asked Karissa Edwards, as she strolled through the neighborhood with her daughter Tuesday. "That's not appropriate for school, whether it be elementary or high school - any of it."

Edwards was looking at an email sent from the school's PTA to local parents outlining next week's Teacher Appreciation Week. The theme - "Talkin' Trash" - is broken down by day, from "Muffin Top Monday," providing breakfast to school staff, to "Tempt Me Tuesday," where teachers would get 5-minute massages on their breaks.

The biggest concern among parents, however, appeared to be over another theme: "White Trash Wednesday," where barbeque would be served to staff on garbage can lids.

"It was incredibly offensive," said Chris King, father to an 8-year old at the school. "I'm mixed race. I'm half-black and half-white, and not only do I hate the term but the term doesn't have a place in elementary school."

"Absolutely it's a derogatory term," King continued, "and I don't think anybody wants to be called ('white trash.')"

The PTA president, Amy Beckner, declined to answer questions Tuesday about where the themes came from.

"I don't have anything to say," Beckner said, before closing the front door to her home.

We’ve taught my kindergarteners to laugh at themselves rather than being offended at every little perceived slight. Seems that lesson isn’t taught everywhere.

They’re not taught to disrespect anybody. Its a costume. Your remarkable oversensitivity notwithstanding.

Good grief.

My dear Mears, your sense of humor is still spot on.

Some things just aren't funny.

“I learned to have compassion for the elderly struggling silently to maintain their dignity and trying not to burden others.”

It’s a very rough time of life. I have been (so far) one of the lucky ones.

I talked to an old friend this morning who lost her leg several months ago (diabetes), and is going through a very rough rehab process. She was an incredible skier but will manage. We may be old,but we’re tough.

One of my pet peeves though,is when an 18 year old clerk or waitress calls me “dear”. :-)

We elders are constantly laughing at ourselves. I’ll also tolerate the teasing from my kids since they’re getting along in years themselves, but I wouldn’t tolerate it from my grandchildren.

We’re all different and that makes life interesting.

Ciao !

I'm sorry to hear about your friend; it surely is a rough time of life.

Oh yeah, I know what you mean.

The local radio station constantly runs ads from Elder Services (or whatever the hell they call themselves) reminding the elderly to look both ways before they cross the street and not walk out in front of buses, etc. in the most unbelievably patronizing way you could imagine. I'm surprised they don't end the segments with a rousing rendition of "Itsy, Bitsy Spider" just for all us old idiots.

They drive me crazy, crazy I tell you!!

Graduated high school there in 1970. My mother, brother and father are buried there. It used to be a relatively crime free suburb that was ruined by the King County bureaucrats allowing huge apartment complexes which in turn attracted way too many third world types, which forced the citizens to incorporate in 1996. There are still a whole lot of good people living in that area, and they (caucasians) are not the problem.

Oh. My. God.

Are you telling me that you are supposed to look both ways before crossing the street?

Who knew?

Don’t you get it? We are all animals. In the animal kingdom, when a lion wants to show he/she is above others, he/she has to act certain ways to prove it. Of course, this is a free country and you are always in the position to get even. If calling each other names and being louder make us feel better, by all means, anger management is important to our health.

I have known black men who are more decent than you, just from what you just said. You should be ashamed of yourself.
