A toddler was killed by his family's pet pit bull on Wednesday in their home in Georgia.
The 2-year-old boy, whose name has not been released, was not home alone with the dog but his mother had just stepped at the room at the time of the attack.
The dog was is now in the custody of Fulton County Animal Services, and they said that they will be running tests on the dog.

I have been around really good, nice large dogs that are indeed part of the family and never bared their teeth to any family member, we have owned many. I still stand by my belief that babies and toddlers and large dogs should be separated unless there is hands on adult supervision. The size difference means if that dog does get aggressive with that child- even once the results can be horrific.
Maybe part of my belief is from the fact that we always had horses and big dogs and my mother was very aware of the fact that horses and large dogs can do major damage to a small child. Interactions with horses and large dogs was treated the same by my mother- it just didn’t happen without an adult directly supervising every moment of the encounter. Our horses and dogs were really nice too, but the size difference meant if anything happened accident or other reaction of the animal the result was not going to be good.
Throughout my life we have owned many large dogs, none of them ever showed any aggression to a child- me or any other child. It was just always instilled in me that the size difference meant if things do go wrong they will be really wrong. My mother was adamant that big dogs and small children need direct adult supervision until dogs are adjusted to children and children learn how to treat animals and I have always thought that was a good idea as well.
I have heard more and more stories of dogs mauling babies and toddlers and I think back it just didn’t seem to happen years ago. I never knew anyone that had a child mauled/seriously bitten by the family dog. I know several it has happened to in the past few years, not just in stories but personally know a couple- not deaths thank goodness but serious bites.
People used to have more common sense about babies, toddlers and dogs. Our dogs were trained to mind, respect people, not to beg and my parents spent time teaching us to treat animals with respect and kindness and until they felt dog and child had been properly trained interactions were directly supervised.
That is not what I see happen now, and even reading many of these “dog mauls toddler” stories it amazes me. Details are usually few, but I have been to homes where babies/toddlers and large dogs are wandering around both are unsupervised- have seen dogs no one bothered to train and children no one is teaching to be kind to animals- then to top it off child is alternating between torturing the dog and packing around snacks at mouth level to the dog. To me this creates a pack situation and at some point dog decides to be leader of the pack.
We had a male black lab when our third child was born. He was about 2 at the time, so at that doggie age when they can be unpredictable. But this dog, RIP, was a gentle as could be. We have lots of pictures of him sleeping next to the baby on the baby blanket on the floor, with her using him as a pillow, etc. What a great dog he was.
You are so correct.
When my husband was a very little boy, he was in his backyard, being watched by his older brother and the family German Shepherd. While the brother’s back was turned, an older kid threw a rock at my little toddler husband and hit him in the head. Hearing him cry, my mother-in-law ran outside. She found her youngest son with a blood-covered head and their Shepherd on top of the little SOB who threw the rock. That dog went after him like a streak and brought him down.
Afterwards, the dog was classified as vicious and they had to get rid of him. A damned shame, if you ask me.
[[I don’t really believe pitbull are vicious.]]
Most victims of pit bull attacks/maulings never beleived they were vicious either- These dogs are bred for combat- it’s i ntheir DNA- even if they seem calm- at any point htye could explode and you NEVER know what might set them off-
I took care of bison, and for them ost part, they were very calm- BUT you could NEVER turn your back o nthem even if you ‘made friends’ with them and if they seemed docile- I also knew a nieghbor who owned bison and two years ago, after havign been aroudn htem all his life, was gored through the stomach by what he felt was a harmless pet- He survived by was horribly disfigued-
Timothy treadwell felt he ‘knew’ grizzlies- coudl trust them, could gain their trust- he even exposed his naieve girlfriend to them and bnoth of them paid for their ignorance with their lives
[[My uncle worked at our local SPCA for 20+ years and maintained that poodles were the most consistently vicious dogs he ever encountered and the only one that ever bit him.]]
This is what’s caleld anectdotal evidence- many other peopel can attest ot the breed goign berserk for no reason- there are several breeds mroe susceptible to this- shepperds, poodles, rotwielers, pinchers, and many others- soem are much more docile- howeve3r ALL are capable of goign bad- soem just more so than others-
Its not a matter of fairness. Not whatsoever......stop trying to minimize the threat of pit bulls in polite society.
Vicious Poodles????? Lolololol.....the miniature/toy ones have attitude, but vicious....the difference between a poodle snap/nip and a Pit Bull bite forms a wide gulf....one that even Evil Kneviel couldn’t jump over......
The poodle’s snap is an irritation/annoyance....the pit bull’s bite a medical and/or life threatening event......
You’re talking apples and oranges.
In developing the breed almost all sporting breeds i.e. labs, poodles, setters, pointers, etc. breeding animals were selected for nose, eyesight, endurance, and temperament. Vicious dogs never survived the cull they were expected to be household “family” dogs.....besides almost all sporting dogs have a bred in “soft” mouth to minimize any damage to the meat of any game taken...bird dogs don’t bite down hard because they can’t....they haven’t the jaw muscles for it....Bidibility/sociability was a very desirable trait in these breeds......they are 99.9% more likely to expend their lives protecting a child’s life than taking a child’s life.....
Unlike you with your Sheppard’s, I often get neighbors coming over so that their children can play with my German Shorthaired Pointers. The kids love petting, chasing, and rough housing with them without a single worry from mom.....Can you say the same for any pit bull? or even a working breed like yours?
The breed development of the fighting breeds was quite the opposite with endurance, aggression, and jaw strength prime considerations for breeding dogs....Pits do not fit the standard definition/understanding of “companion animals.” Quite the opposite......they are essentially social psychopaths and were intentionally bred to be just that......to argue otherwise is decisional...
No matter how well raised a Pit Bull is, or how “safe” you think it is, you never know when it will revert to its bred-in traits. It can and does happen in the blink of an eye with disastrous results for all involved. You read about it all the time in the papers or see it on TV......don’t be naïve....
Note that domestic dogs do not in the main come from wolf stock.....if you allow dogs to breed indiscriminately they will revert back to their origins in a few generations......~25-40 lbs, medium sized with short yellow coats..... you see the type often in third world countries.....
It is amazing the extent that dog owners are willing to practice self deception. "It's not the breed, it's the owner." being one of the favorite lies they actually believe. It's funny how you can visually see that dogs can be bred for any number of physical characteristics, but the dog lovers refuse to believe that agressivness is a breed characteristic.

Pit bulls are terriers........
All pit bulls are terriers....the bull terrier has had the fight bred out of him by the English.....they are actually sissies!
I once moved to the city and gave my old yellow Lab to my hunting partner. After a few weeks living with him, his wife was in the house and the three little kids were playing out in the yard. UPS truck showed up and my old gentle dog who never frowned in his life refused to let the driver out of the truck. The wife introduced them and after that he was welcome any time and greeted with a smile.
Dogs in the USA occupy the same position as cows in India.
<><>><
Really? You see a lot of cows euthanized in cow shelters in India?
Who knew?
Nor do we believe that dogs are reincarnated from people. (I like to think mine are guardian angels of a lower order)
You go on to prove my point
You likewise don’t see a lot of children killed by cows in India, nor do you see 300,000 people bitten by cows seriously enough to require ER treatment in India. The analogy was not meant to be exact, but to show that dog owners do not view their pets rationally. But go on show just how irrational dog lovers are when someone suggests that their darling warling precious wecious puppie wuppikins might actually be ANIMALS driven by instincts rather than rational thought and not small furry people who can be reasoned with.
LOL.
My golden retriever convinced me I was also a golden in a former life. Obviously I was a bad dog because I’ve been reincarnated as a human.
Just yanking your chain. I know from being around here as long as I have that at least 2 things put you close to the edge ... Lincoln and the Paris Hilton-type dog owners.
But really, the picture you paint of dog owners is more of a cariacature than a true to life picture of the typical dog owner. Either that or you really need to start hanging out with different people.
Sorry to disappoiint, but in my house, I’m alpha, not the 2 dogs.
Speak for yourself.
I hear about many different breeds/types causing death and serious injury,
because I care enough to have my eyes and ears open to sources other than FR.
Instead of focusing on the deaths caused by one particular breed or type,
I investigate all attacks, fatal or otherwise, regardless of breed/type.
I seek to discover the common elements involved in order to educate folks
so they may avoid the mistakes that can result in injuries or death.
No matter what the dog.
i repeat, you ever hear of a poodle mauling anyone?
see if you can come up with a news story on that one,
some breeds are just falt out more likely to trigger prey instinct and damage a person. if you dont believe that, then, well.. cant help.
doesnt mean every dog of a certain breed will always attack, but certain breeds, like the pit, are more likely to.
