New Jersey golfer dies after tree falls on him as he attempts to retrieve errant ball

Police say a New Jersey golfer is dead after a tree fell on him while he tried to retrieve an errant ball from the backyard of a home adjacent to an exclusive country club.

Alpine police identified the man as 60-year-old Sung Paik of Union City.

Yes - very common for a house to line the golf course. Happens all the time (retreiving balls from private yards - not trees falling on them).

I thought it must have been a eucalyptus tree, but apparently not.

Eucalyptus trees sometimes self-amputate branches, sometimes large branches, much to the surprise of people walking beneath them.

Of course......it's in OB and gets a stroke, a drop and and another stroke for also slow play....

I guess if you are not right next to the errant tree (as I am when using a chain saw), identification and selection of a proper course of action is more difficult.

I can relate to that. I have over 30 years of experience with a chain saw (consumer use) and one time I was cutting down a tree, using the proper procedure, when the tree started spinning--yes, spinning--on its trunk. I had no idea of the direction in which it was going to fall, so I just decided to run one way and luckily for me, it was one of the right ways.
