A Pennsylvania high schooler whose cheeky op-ed in the Wall Street Journal sparked a national conversation on college admissions might be a University of Michigan Wolverine next year.
Suzy Lee Weiss appeared on the Today Show Thursday morning and, when asked where she'd be going to college in the fall, said she hadn't decided but coughed "Go Blue," a favorite U-M cheer.
On March 29 the Journal published Weiss' opinion piece entitled 'To (All) the Colleges That Rejected Me.' Weiss had dreamed of going to Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania, but the Pittsburgh high school senior was rejected despite a reported 4.5 GPA.
In her piece, Weiss laments what she considers the unrealistic expectations of college admissions offices.
"Colleges tell you, 'Just be yourself.' That is great advice, as long as yourself has nine extracurriculars, six leadership positions, three varsity sports, killer SAT scores and two moms. Then by all means, be yourself!" She wrote. "If you work at a local pizza shop and are the slowest person on the cross-country team, consider taking your business elsewhere."
A week after it was first published, the op-ed remains the most-read article on the Journal's website.
On the Today Show Thursday, Weiss said her op-ed was satire, using jokes to illustrate the seeming absurdity of the college application process.
"Everyone my age, whether they wanted to get into Penn State their whole lives or Harvard, is agreeing with me that it's just a rat race nowadays and it's such a business model as opposed to who's most qualified should get in," she said. "It's a crapshoot and I understand that."
While she was rejected from the Ivy League colleges she dreamt of during her youth, she did get into several Big 10 schools including U-M, which was recently rated a top 'dream school' by the Princeton Review.
"I got into great schools in the Big Ten: University of Michigan, Indiana, Penn State and Wisconsin. All of which I am ecstatic about. I couldn't be more happy," she said.
And if Weiss' "Go Blue" cheer means anything, we may be seeing her in Ann Arbor this fall.
One thing is for sure, if she doesn't have 2 moms, she will now be seen as a legitimate target for liberal profs who will encourage other students to abuse her.
‘I couldn’t be more happy’
In grammatical English, that would be “happier,” my dear. But no one teaches grammar these days.
We are somewhat dealing (a year early) with college requirements. She is right about needing a ton of extracurricular activities. (sounds like she had a part time job and didn’t have the time to bulk up on these). Her weighted GPA was a 4.5 which isn’t bad at all. I didn’t see her SAT/ACT scores. Use to be that a college looked at the GPA/SAT for acceptance... it isn’t that way anymore. You need those and belong to a lot of clubs.
Close enough for the U of Michigan (Go Ski U Ma)
Looking up her name on the net it looks like she’s already taking a lot of heat for everything from having a Jewish name to expecting white privilege.
So, what credentials did Barack have to go to Harvard?
She delivered a solid kick to the butt to liberals. Her article is well worth reading. Trust me on this, it will make you smile.

To (All) the Colleges That Rejected Me
What could I have done differently over the past years?
For starters, had I known two years ago what I know now, I would have gladly worn a headdress to school.
Show me to any closet, and I would've happily come out of it.
"Diversity!" I offer about as much diversity as a saltine cracker.
If it were up to me, I would've been any of the diversities: Navajo, Pacific Islander, anything.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, I salute you and your 1/32 Cherokee heritage.OUCH !!!
You know.... I was going to mention skin color. And if anyone is wondering... being white (especially a white male) drops you in points immediately.
It's Ski-U-Mah, actually. :)
I am sure it would. She sounds like an extremely intelligent and ambitious young lady. I wish her the best and I have the strong feeling she will go very far in whatever study she chooses.
“expecting white privilege” =
expecting not to be discriminated AGAINST because she’s not “minority”.
Go to a tech school and learn a skill.
She should have claimed to be a skinny mulatto, a communist, and an illegal alien without a birth certificate.
She would have been a shoo-in at Harvard.
It goes right to the point of what I’ve been saying about colleges all along. We’re so busy filling them with liberals that a good student is forced to slog through a swamp regardless of their personal ideology.
I have a nephew who would like to get into med school and he showed me the list of things he needed to do with suggested groups to be involved with. Things like gay and lesbian alliance groups and save the planet groups were the ones that gave him the best chance of getting accepted.
Wherever she goes to college, she will have liberals biting at her ankles the rest of her life.
Blame the author of the article. She spoke the words and the author is the one who messed up the grammer!
Some schools have automatic admission with good grades and a good SAT/ACT.
My son did lots in high school, and got into all of the UC’s he applied to. However, he ended up at Texas A&M where he was an automatic admit. He could have relaxed in high school if he knew that was the college he was going to.
