Chosun TV is reporting that South Korean military have lost contact with two North Korean submarines that left their naval base in Hwanghae Province a few days ago.
There has obviously been a lot of changes between last week and now and South Korean military officials suggested that while maneuvers in February were nothing meaningful, now it is provocation.
The two 'torpedo' subs are small 130-ton, 30-meter, 10-man machines that can stay submerged for three-to-four days.

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to let them get wet...

These Yono Class midget submarines have a range of about 50 nautical miles submerged and about 550 nautical miles on the surface.
The larger Sang-O-II submarines have a submerged range of 1,500 nautical miles or more if the Norks have increased their range with some later modifications.

Look what I found, little buddy!

“Lost contact” may mean “we sunk them”.
Can’t imagine such a small sub built for North Korea would have technology to evade sonar.

Maybe John Locke blew em up because he didn't want anyone to get off the Peninsula?

I like your theory. “Gee, we don’t know what happened to those subs of yours... there were there just a minute ago, then we went for a cup of tea, and they were gone!”

I heard that, due to strong currents and muddy waters, it is not easy to track these small submarines with sonar as long as they stay in the area, not far from shore. I hope some further measures have been in place since the sinking of Cheonan.

They can stay submerged for a lot longer than 3-4 days, they just don’t ever come up.

(I can neither confirm or deny that; even if I could, I couldn't - it's classified.)

I heard strong currents make loud noises if you hear from the sonar. No saying that NK subs are not noisy, but they seem to claim that currents make louder noise. Since I am not an expert, I invite any expert at FR on the matter to enlighten us.
