While The History Channel's miniseries "The Bible" continues to garner millions of viewers every week, one comedian has opted to poke fun at the program.
Comedy Central satirist Stephen Colbert, known for his faux conservative program "The Colbert Report," had a segment Monday evening about the miniseries and its production team.
"The Word of God, the story of all creation, doesn't really have the legs to sustain an entire series; unlike The History Channel's Big Shrimpin,'" quipped Colbert.
He also talked about Roma Downey, co-producer of the miniseries, being cast for the role of the Virgin Mary.
"Wow, I wonder who she had to sleep with to get that part? Nobody! It's called the Immaculate Audition," said Colbert, mockingly calling producers Downey and Burnett "America's preeminent theological scholars."
"This is huge. Don't take it from me folks how huge it is. Take it from the man who wrote the Bible: Mark Burnett."
Colbert also poked some fun at Diogo Morgado, who was casted to play Jesus Christ. Colbert referred to him as "a beefcake Jesus."
"Their Jesus is way too hot. It does not project holiness when you cannot look at him without saying 'God damn!'" said Colbert.
"We need a Jesus who suffers like us with a spare tire, receding hairline and who only came back on Easter because he heard there was chocolate."
A practicing Catholic who has taught Sunday School and periodically done his "Colbert Report" program on Ash Wednesday with ashes on his forehead, Colbert has stated in the past that he feels no religious concern to his humor.
At a September 2012 panel discussion that included New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan and the Rev. James Martin, official chaplain for the "Colbert Report," Colbert explained that his humor focuses more on the misuse of religion.
"I love my church warts and all," said Colbert before the estimated 3,000 people gather. "If Jesus doesn't have a sense of humor, I am in huge trouble."
Newsflash Stephen, either way your in trouble.
Thin ice...
I like Colbert and often find his antics funny. I’m a Christian and am pretty sure Jesus had/has a great sense of humor, but it does distress me when Colbert is described as a practicing Catholic, yet takes God’s name in vain during his schtick. That is off limits.
Aren't we all?
Matt 6:24
24 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
That is off limits.

I knew a good Catholic girl once. Never said “God damn” or tolerated anyone who said it. But the f-word? The s-word? Even worse and more raunchy words?
Those were OK fine. She said ‘em all the time. Just not “God damn”.
I never understood that.
Colbert prefers, however, that his children not watch his show The Colbert Report, saying that "kids can't understand irony or sarcasm, and I don't want them to perceive me as insincere."
I know of liberal kids who believe that he is offering the God's honest truth.
The latter is blasphemous; the former ones are not.
What does the Bible say about f&s-words and other body function words? I thought it was just do not take The Lords name in vain.
Pope Benedict said that the greatest problem today is RELATIVE MORALTIY.
The true test of whether conversation is decent or not is to think of saying the words in front of a priest or a respected family member.
If this "good Catholic" girl would say those words in front of said priest then a few things have happened:
1. she acquired NO CLASS in her up-bring;
2. she just doesn't care whom she offends;
3. she LIKES saying those words for some odd reason.
Said Catholic girl wasn't so "good" to my way of thinking.
MAYBE she's just an idiot. Is that possible?

DEFINATELY possible.
lol
I think you're correct.
However, that doesn't let her off the hook if she KNOWS that she is offensive. THAT scenario doesn't fit into the "Do unto others"--does it?

No, there’s a whole lot more the Bible says about cursing. It’s a sin. Period.

Let me know when Colbert takes a run at Mohammed and the Koran. Until then, he’s just another media weasel taking cheap shots at beliefs that are the foundation for our entire civilization.
BTTT
I think Colbert is guilty of some “Big Shrimpin’”
There's a little thing called the Judgement in which we kneel before Gods Throne. At that point there, his religious concern might reach heights he's only imagined.
