As it stands, building artificially intelligent machines that can teach themselves is not only really difficult, it’s a painfully slow process. Looking to accelerate things, next month DARPA will begin to crack the whip with a program called Probabilistic Programming for Advanced Machine Learning (PPAML).
Besides seeking to dramatically increase the number of people who can successfully build machine-learning applications, the program wants to radically increase the effectiveness of machine learning experts so they can create new applications beyond the limits of technology that’s currently available.
“Our goal is that future machine learning projects won’t require people to know everything about both the domain of interest and machine learning to build useful machine learning applications,” Fisher added. Through new probabilistic programming languages specifically tailored to probabilistic inference, we hope to decisively reduce the current barriers to machine learning and foster a boom in innovation, productivity and effectiveness.”

Last year I had a funny experience with Apple.
I was trying to set up iTunes on my laptop and ran into some kind of problem. After trying a few minutes to solve it myself, I called the Apple help line. They were very responsive, and "escalated" my problem a couple of levels very quickly.
Having been "escalated," I was talking to a very smart sounding young female. She began to tell me what to do... go here, select this, press that, etc.
Then she says "OK, now wait a few seconds for iTunes to become self-aware."
That was too much for me. I started giggling. I said "Self aware? You mean iTunes is conscious? Is iTunes going to become SkyNet?"
Well, she didn't laugh. She seemed a little deflated through the rest of the call. I tried to cheer her up with my sense of humor, but to no avail.
She did - I hasten to point out - fix my problem.
I think we are perhaps living during a time that could become quite perilous. Genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and yes, artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.
