Old Army joke: The four main destructive effects of a nuclear detonation are blast, heat, radiation, and paperwork.

A few years ago I had to do some research on paper technology for my job. I spent a couple of days at the library of a nearby university, going through a number of paper industry trade journals.

Naturally, I looked for web addresses on the cover of each publication. You know what? They didn’t have any! Not one of them had an address on the World Wide Web!

I think toilet paper is here to stay. Same with Kleenex.

Yep, you had to complete all of that paperwork regarding the release of those missiles, log the message and keyturn events. Fill out the paperwork to cover the activation of the keyswitch and release of the launch codes. That’s not counting collection of all the system status tapes, hardcopy messages, etc.

I used to sell wood pulp to tissue makers. Those plants are increasing faster than printing and writing paper makers are closing.

That’s just the front end. Every single military person who observes the detonation is required to report an enormous number of details.

The observer NBC-1 reports work their way up the chain through NBC-2 through NBC-5, which probably takes it as high as the Pentagon and all branches, then from there to allied powers and NATO, then reports are generated through the alphabet soup of federal agencies.

This means Departments of Energy, State, the 16 intelligence agencies, EPA, USGS, NOAA, NASA, VA, GSA, NIH, and everybody else in the government. Boucoup nuclear contingency plans are activated.

We’re talking forests worth of paper, here.
