COLUMBUS, Ohio, - A Texas woman said police in Tennessee detained her because they thought the Ohio State University Buckeye logo on her car was a "marijuana sticker."
Bonnie Jonas-Boggioni, 65, of Plano, Texas, told The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch she and her 66-year-old husband were driving near Memphis Feb. 4 when police in a black sport utility vehicle pulled them over, and then a second black SUV pulled behind the first.
Jonas-Boggioni said she hadn't been speeding so she wondered why police were pulling her over.
"They were very serious," she said. "They had the body armor and the guns."
One of the officers asked her, "What are you doing with a marijuana sticker on your bumper?"
Jonas-Boggioni, a longtime Buckeyes fan who grew up in Columbus -- and is president of the Ohio State Alumni Club in the Dallas-Fort Worth area -- told the officer what the decal actually represents but she said he didn't seem to get it.
"He looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language," she said.
Jonas-Boggioni's husband, Guido, 66, got out of the car to show the police his sweatshirt -- an item from Ohio State's 2002 national-championship season, sporting a Buckeye leaf.
One of the officers said someone outside his jurisdiction had seen the logo on Jonas-Boggiono's car and thought it might mean the car was carrying pot, the Dispatch said.
"It's just amazing they would be that dumb," said.
A West Tennessee Drug Task Force spokeswoman said a decal is not sufficient cause to detain a motorist. The Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Shelby County sheriff's office in Memphis had no record of the stop.
Wolverine fans, perhaps.
Guess I better tape over my Gettysburg College Alumni decal before I drive through Tennessee...
Just shows the continuing stupidity of those that protect and serve.
Buckeye = a hairless nut of no commercial value.

This smells like a hoax.
Either you neglected to use sarcasm tags or you are totally devoid of logical reasoning ability, I am unsure as to which is the case.
What’s even odder is that people we pay to use their common sense are stupid enough to think a drug smuggler would place advertising signs on their vehicle.
Actually am not surprised, we sure don’t now and maybe never did have the smartest people as LEO. Local LEO especially.
As to the bumper sticker, it does sort of look like a pot leaf..... maybe the lack of smarts includes someone pasting this on their bumper.
I hear Obama smokes Hawaiian Buckeye.
“Actually am not surprised, we sure dont now and maybe never did have the smartest people as LEO. Local LEO especially.”
I find this comment to be odious and highly without merit. Evidently you have a very limited knowledge of people that serve our communities in law enforcement.

Only if you say they should have been smart enough to know they would be stopped by idiots in uniforms. Let’s not blame the victims! I live in South Carolina, if I put a Gamecock logo on my pickup truck am I going to be stopped for smuggling fighting chickens? Are they going to think I am advertising? This stop could not have been any more absurd, even if it really had been a marijuana leaf with a written inscription saying “Look Marijuana” there would be no legal justification for stopping the vehicle.
I live in South Carolina but have never gotten into the excitement over the Clemson vs. Carolina rivalry. It’s a good thing too, people from SC who want to visit Tenn might be stopped for smuggling fighting cocks or tigers. Obviously anyone with one of those on their vehicle must be advertising, right? I have always had a great love for the state of Tennessee and this is a great disappointment to me, I would actually call it distressing.
The ACLU (I know) has a cell phone app for that.
I am considering getting a dual image dash cam for the vehicles like those common in Russia, where the people have to deal with corrupt cops. Also good for videos of meteorites.
Hope that's sarcasm
“Hope in one hand, spit in the other and see which one fills up, first.”
Not at all sarcastic.
