Lehigh Valley Congressman Charlie Dent said Penn State's culture is not to blame for Jerry Sandusky's decades of child sexual abuse, according to a review of the university's internal investigation by Joe Paterno's family.
Dent, in a telephone interview Friday, said he had read summaries of the review commissioned by the late head football coach's family. The review is set to be published Sunday morning.
"To blame the culture of Penn State for Sandusky's crimes is a horrible mistake," Dent said Friday, characterizing the findings of one of the experts commissioned by the Paterno family. "To blame the culture of Penn State or even the football program is not supported by the facts."
Former FBI Director Louis Freeh led an investigation commissioned by Penn State into the school's handling of sexual abuse allegations against Sandusky. The National Collegiate Athletic Association used that investigation in determing sanctions against the school and its football program.
Dent said the review cements his conclusion that Penn State has been "horribly mistreated" by the NCAA. After the college sports governing body hit Penn State with a $60 million fine and stripped the one-time Big10 powerhouse of football scholarships last summer, Dent called on NCAA president Mark Emmert to keep the money in Pennsylvania and restore opportunities for student athletes.
"The entire Penn State culture was punished based on this report," Dent said, adding that he will call for congressional hearings on the NCAA's decision.
Dent said the Paterno family's review comprises reports by four experts, including a former U.S. attorney general whom Dent would not identify. "The former attorney general says the Freeh report is seriously flawed, very flawed," Dent said.

I don’t think I said it was an unbiased source. It’s merely another source that may have some info that’s not been widely known or in the general media. I’ll take in what they have to say, consider any obvious bias or their opinion statements, then evaluate whether it affects my view of the situation.
Oh, it was against the law. Well I that case, we know it didn’t happen, because nothing illegal ever happened at Penn State, right?
Flawless logic. You are a shining example of what people point to when talking about the Penn State excuse train rolling through central PA.
You’re a shining example of someone who comments on that which she doesn’t have full knowledge or understanding of.
This false narrative is unraveling. There’s not much you can do about it.
Joe Paterno wouldn’t have covered up anything for anybody. If they had run Sandusky out of town you liberals would be calling Penn State “Homophobic U”
You are correct. The false narrative the penn staters have been pushing since day 1 has already unraveled. Reports, pushed out by the parties involved, will not cause anyone but the loyal brown shirts to take notice. This will do nothing but further erode penn Starr’s reputation, because the conclusions are already known before the report was even started(sounds familiar?). And the loyalists will continue to show zero remorse for their university’s digusting handling of this matter for the sale of the football program and the reputation of one man. Was it worth it?
Another cult member checks in!
Joe Paterno: "I wish I had done more."
Which means he could have, but he didn't to protect his image.
Damn those victims!(/s)
The "university" consists of hundreds of thousands of current and former students and staff. Depending upon whose version of events you believe, these criminal acts were performed and/or hushed up by no more than 10 people. Calling down blanket damnation over the entire university is akin to blaming all US citizens because you don't like the President. It's really quite bizarre, and in my experience most of the folks who hold to this line of "thought" have a pathological need to prove their superiority.
Present company excepted, I'm sure.
You’re right I am a cult member. What do you think Paterno should have done about it.
I’m going to seriously read this report.
Right after I read the report that OJ commissioned to find the killer of his murdered victims.
Why don't you ask the victims and their families?
It's incredible how many freepers fell for the "Guilt by Association" gambit (and still do) when the incredible hammer of moral and economic injustice was smashed indiscriminately on the university, the community and on the heads of everyone including the school janitor that had any connection with Penn or Paterno....innocent or otherwise.
"Guilt by Association"....one of the age-old pillars of the "commune vs. the individual" agenda.
I was in church the Sunday morning after Martin Luther King was assassinated. More than 200 in the pews.
The substitute young pastor (fresh out of seminary) delivering the sermon leaned forward in the pulpit and, pointing his finger repeatedly, stated over and over again:......"and YOU pulled the trigger"....."and YOU pulled the trigger"....."and YOU pulled the trigger".
An usher, our Township Supervisor (a heavy donor to the church) and I got up and quietly walked out. The scores of other congregants sat mute and took their indictment like sheep.
The upshot was that the liberal young minister was never invited back. He is now the head Administrator of a large Senior rest home and hospital facility owned by our denomination in my former state of Illinois. Probably where he and his bleeding heart belong.
The point here being...."Guilt by Association" is a marxist/fascist propaganda tactic. Watch for it everywhere. Obama's speeches are rife with it. The anti-gun movement is rife with it.
Separate out those who are the real perpetrators and sinners.

If I could I would ask them why they didn’t press the issue with the authorities sooner. Like I said Joe Paterno wouldn’t have covered up anything for anybody.
Reality says otherwise!
Liberals = Penn Staters =
when it comes to their sacred, untouchable institutions.
Huh? A simpleminded analogy that makes no sense...good work by you.
For the record, I've condemned those clearly involved and am still waiting for the facts when I'm not sure. Should Paterno have done more? By his own admission, yes. Did he actively cover-up Sandusky's crimes? I'm still waiting on the evidence to make up my mind. I've spoken with a lot of alums and that's a pretty representative opinion.
Of course, since you prefer to paint with the broad brush you wouldn't actually know what Penn Staters think, would you? Acknowledging that this is a complicated issue that doesn't lend itself to packaged sound bytes would undermine your apparent desperate need to feel morally superior.
“Separate out those who are the real perpetrators and sinners.”
Excellent analysis as to how things actually are, rather than the made up versions we are assaulted with by the MSM and the Libs. Bravo.
“As much as folks around here like to point out the obvious logical fallacy of liberals guilt by association tactics (e.g. NRA members have blood on their hands for gun-related crimes), threads like these illustrate the extent to which critical thinking is in short supply on all sides of the political spectrum. People are so easily influenced by an ESPN headline that seems to meet their preconceived notions. No wonder politicians make use of emotional appeals so often; its generally effective regardless of ones political bent.”
Bingo. Excellent observation.
Looking forward to making the drive up to UCF in 2014. People wondered why we let UVA bail on a return PSU visit in 2013. I think it might be because UVA will be back on the schedule in 2014 as a B1G member.
