No halftime show at Super Bowl 2014? Thats the word, according to planners who say the weather may prevent appearances at matchup XLVIII, set for New Jersey.
Its because of the cold weather, said one involved with next years Super Bowl planning, in a New York Post report. Its not only the acts and the singers, but also the crews that have to put the stage together.
You just cant assemble the stage and break it down fast enough in the cold.

There's actually a good reason for that: royalties. Marching bands don't often play original music, but rather arrangements of existing songs. The royalty structure is much different for "live performance in a stadium" vs. "broadcast on national TV" -- the networks check with the bands in advance as to their playlist so they can pre-clear the songs and pick the right time(s) to cut back to the stadium.
Imagine all the union thugs who won’t get paid...
I think they should show a televised repeat of the SB halftime show where Prince did his concert in the rain in Miami. It was riveting just to see if the little snot was going to electrocute himself in front of 80,000 people.
Heck, the NE all voted for Obama. Let him sing Karaoke for halftime. Or let him host the “Punt, Pass and Raise Your Taxes” competition.
The official NFL policy is no city with temps below 50 degrees unless they have a dome. Not sure how NJ got selected.
Watching the healthy young girl on stage, going by the name Beyonce, she was quite agile. I looked at my future daughter in law and said “ you know when Vince Lombardi was winning Super Bowls...this performance would have been called pornography”.
How things change
No, it’s about prime-time ratings.
If the alternative is another lip-sync trash-fest, I’ll take no halftime show!
And?
That's only if you have a huge stage for prancing and dancing on.
If you get an old-time rock-and-roll band (or maybe a country band) that just stands there and plays, then it should not be a problem.

Half time would be a great time for a drum corps competition or something. I am so sick of the MTV sleaze pops.
Sorry, FRiend. Both of those girls can “sang.” They have spectacular pipes.
It’s too bad they can’t just shut up and sang.
They will find a way to have a half time show, even if it has to be built around fire jugglers to keep things from freezing, they will find a way.
1. After 9/11, many people wanted to give NY a SB..but the schedule was set for several years already.
2.The league, if possible, likes to give new stadiums, if in warm weather and/or domed, a SB, soon after they open. About the time that NY would have been eligible for SB consideration, about 2008, the Jets and the Giants had announced plans for a new joint stadium, now MetLife stadium, so it was delayed after it opened.
Remember, the SB is not for the enjoyment of the fans who buy tickets...most don't get a chance..it's for the league, the big hitters, the media, and the sponsors, and since NY is the media capital of the world, these folks like having it there, even if it's freezing outside. They'll all be in the luxury boxes, nice and warm.
There is already a "war" of sorts brewing between NY and NJ over the SB..Look, the stadium is in NJ. BOTH teams have their offices and training complexes in NJ, yet both teams are NY named. Most all the BIG SB week parties and events are going to be held in NYC..Christie is said to be pissed at this..hey, maybe they can have a car-stripping event in Newark..
Yeah! Even in college games now, they don’t show the whole half-time show on tv. It would be a real treat to see a great marching band show.

You don’t remember the Ice Bowl? Well, neither do I, as I wasn’t born yet. I hear it was one hell of a game.
Commercials are why..they pay for the broadcast. The networks pay hundreds of millions to the conferences for the broadcast rights..they have to pay for it somehow..
Football used to be a manly sport, where bad weather was no problem and even considered a plus by many players and true fans. I think a cold weather Super Bowl, now and then, is a great idea.
I think the cold weather will result in many more real fans in the stands as opposed to elites who don’t really care about football.
Also, for the overall tourism experience, I think there is a whole lot more to do in NYC in February than there is in cities with domes, like Indianapolis or Detroit.
Putting the stage together in the cold would certainly affect the singers’ voices and the dancers’ muscles, so then how would they lip-sync?
What about the poor sob players
Fine by me. I’m no prude but that skank fest yesterday was too much that I changed the channel (missed the black out) and didn’t go back until the last couple minutes of the game waiting for Elementary to come on.
