A dog fight ended with a hail of bullets in a Philadelphia suburb, leaving residents shocked and looking for answers.

The incident started on Friday at around noon when a stray dog got into a pickup truck at a red light in Chester, Pa., and began fighting with another pooch, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.

” One officer shot at the dogs five times with a pistol, then another fired one blast from a shotgun. Both dogs were killed.”

Well...I guess he’s filled his quota for the week, anyway.

Someone really needs to make a dog chart with most of the dog breeds identified as “pitbull” in line with the Journalist’s Guide to Firearms that is posted here.

while I try to diffuse a dog fight in a manner that PETA approves.

I’ve only skimmed through the posts here, however the PETA comment stands out. You need to brush up on what PETA really stands for. They are opposed to pet “ownership” and believe in liberating animals (letting them run around loose). They believe it is better for an animal to be dead than to be “owned.” So they may actually approve of police shooting dogs.

A truism:

Any time you have to prove you’re a man, there has to be a doubt lurking around in there, somewhere.

Imagine the scummiest part of Philly taking a really foul crap on the banks of the Delaware.
That’s Chester.

You should have picked up more bones from the local butcher while you had the chance. ;)

Seriously, thanks for compiling and posting the graphic.

[notice which breed is conspicuously *absent* on this list]

I notice on the bite chart that there are no Dobbies listed.

Does not surprise me. I have been owned by several and only had one who ever bit anyone. Considering that the gentleman in question had just raise his hand to her "pup" (yours truly) and she only nipped him I think she was justified.

Somehow, we’ve slipped under the popular radar for a while.

There are some places where they’re on ‘banned breed’ lists and most home insurance companies get really jumpy about them *but*, of all breeds, they are, IMO and experience, one of the least likely to bite unless it’s justified.

Odin’s never bitten anybody but he has made it abundantly clear to a certain subset of society that they really best not be trying to go stupid on “mommy”, several times.

So far, that subset has had the presence of mind to not push their luck.

Now Tito, the Wonder Dobe of my youth did indeed suddenly lurch forward, breaking his collar and launch himself unbidden into the window of a car containing a guy who’d stopped to ‘talk’ to my friend and myself in a McD’s parking lot one night.

He was protection trained and never did anything without a command either before or after that so I was quite shocked...until an LEO said the guy we’d described was an out-of-towner wanted for grabbing and raping women in parking lots.

How that dog knew what that seemingly polite and pleasant guy was really up to, I’ll never know.

He had hold of the guy by the shoulder, working his way into the car further to get hold of his neck and boy, did that dude ever scream like a girl.

Nobody ever saw him this area again.

[hopefully, he bled out somewhere]

Many years before that, my first Dobe, an old sweetheart named Caesar, who wouldn’t bite fleas if his life depended on it was still visually ‘stereotypical’ enough to stop my pedophile uncle from ever touching me again.

I literally owe my life to and love these dogs.

Best dogs, ever.

Doesn’t Chester have a casino?

I’m more familiar w/ West Chester, and it seems a pretty nice area. Had my car worked on at Otto’s BMW, IIRC, it’s on Wilmington Pike...a ways from the riff-raff, I guess. The Holiday Inn Express was nice and clean [no bed-bugs]. :)

I hope these executioners get a demotion and reprimand [I’m dreaming, I know].

West Chester is nowhere near Chester.
Different worlds.

I see the Doberman community has been hard at work removing their breed from the statistics. ;)

Seriously, good information.

Wow, cool story. It’s amazing to me how dogs often *know* about people. I don’t think my goldens are as discerning, which is a positive/negative thing. I never had to worry that they would bite a strange child no matter what, but at the same time they aren’t much protection. Even my spinoni are better watch dogs, at least they will bark at the first sign of a stranger around the house. And they are large and can be menacing looking if you don’t know them. Im not sure who would be menaced by a golden retriever wagging their tail and asking for a cookie.

I’d say Tito *did* receive a command. His Master clearly gave him an order, in my view. (Hopefully Tito got a steak for that. ;) )

Never sell your dogs short.

I’ve told the tale of Minny the Ibizan who acted *totally* out of breed character by jumping on the ex’s back when he was strangling me to death.

Ibizans are not even remotely aggressive or vicious...*ever*.

But she knew he was killing me and did what she had to.

They will always surprise you.
