I bought my first World Almanac in the last week of December 1970 (I have bought one each year since then). I was fascinatined by the miscellaneous facts and statistics. One section I enjoyed was the "celebrities" section, giving the birth place and birth years of famous people in the entertainment business. Of course, there were many listed in this section I had never heard of.
One of my major discoveries was the "one-name celebrities." I had never heard of such a thing before. But here they were--Annabella, Cantinflas, Dagmar, Fabian, Fernandel, Genevieve, Hildegarde, and Margo. Who were these people?
Since then I have learned who all these people were (they're mostly gone now). But one mysterious name is still utterly unknown to me. I can't find it in Wikipedia or the Internet Movie Database, and any name that isn't on one of those two lists must have been a very strange kind of celebrity.
The name was listed as "Lili." To the side it had in parentheses "Liliane Lewin." The only information was that she was born in France in 1925. That was all.
As I said, I can't find a "Liliane Lewin" or "Lili" in either of the two major online celebrity references. I did an Internet search and turned up plenty of hits, but they appear to be referring to currently living non-celebrities on Facebook of Linked In. So I am at a complete and total loss.
Does anyone out there recall a celebrity of any kind named Liliane Lewin, born in France in 1925, who went by the name of "Lili?"
Thanks!
PS: Please don't refer me to the MGM movie Lili starring Leslie Caron. That's not the subject.
Fabian was a teen idol from the 60s. Played in North To Alaska with John Wayne.
When I was about 10 or 11 (which would have been in the mid-60s), I had a piano teacher who must have been at least 65 at the time who claimed that she had traveled with and played in the shows put on by Hildegarde, who was a renowned concert pianist and singer back in the 20s and 30s.
Until recently, “Lili” had been dating Manti Te’o.
It’s Lilo, an actress.
She’s mentioned in the Wiki entry for the song “I Love Paris.” Sang it on Broadway.
That was one of the categories on The Jokers Wild...One Name Celebs. You would have cleaned-up!
Just checked google images. There are pics of her. Search “Lilo, Can-Can.”
There was another one-name pianist lady from the 1930s, billed as “Ramona.” I think Paul Whiteman hired her for a while, as an added-attraction for theater appearances. She made a few records. Light, cabaret stuff.
I have a pet peeve with celebrities that use a single name. As John Wayne would say, “that’s only half a name.”
In the late 50’s I went to the Nogales bull ring and watched Cantinflas. He was hilarious. He was also in the movie. “Around the World in Eighty Days.”
Maybe she is a mistake of nature, like Cimmaron...
I’ve never liked the single name thing either. Seems rather pretentious.
Always thought the “Lady Gaga” thing is stupid as well. “Gaga.” Baby-talk, goo-goo ga-ga. It always makes me think of some baby, spitting up his formula.
Apropos to the artist.
Lily Munster Aka Mon Cheri
Could it be Hildegard Knef? (1925-2002)

The first thing that came to mind when I heard the name "Lady Gaga" was the "modern,, pepped up" balcony scene from Romeo & Juliet featured in the movie "Hollywood Revue of 1929." This version has Romeo saying, "Julie, I'm just gaga over you. No kiddin, baby..."
