Young quarterbacks have been the dominant storyline of the 2013 season.
Of the 12 NFL playoff teams, six start quarterbacks that are either in their first or second year. The days of needing an established veteran at the quarterback position may be over.
Of those five young starting quarterbacks, three are African-American. Rookies Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson will play each other in the premier wildcard game this weekend, with the Washington Redskins hosting the Seattle Seahawks Sunday afternoon. Colin Kaepernick gets a week off, as he helped lead his San Francisco 49ers to a bye.
And while our common notions of the how much experience is needed for a quarterback to to lead a team to the Super Bowl may be changing, the notions that many have for the black quarterback may finally begin to change too. RGIII, Wilson and Kaepernick have shown just how far black quarterbacks have come.

Perhaps I should have said “In the modern era.” I mean, look at Blanda — they don’t even have a NAME for what he did on the field.
Can’t wait to see how Manziel does in the pros. Probably like Tebow, not allowed to play his game.
Ask Jimmy the Greek.

the existence of this articke proves that Rush was right. There is a section of the media which does root for the success of the black QB. It may be justafiable, but the author of this article is likely in that cheering section and that predeliction may skew one’s perception of performance.
It’s the era of Obama: everything HAS to be historic. So the media pumps up any BS they can.
Good one !
:-)
.
Doug Williams, Warren Moon? HELLO!
I really do not care if Russell Williams is black, half black, half white, whatever.....
All I care is that watching Seattle Seahawks games is fun again.
You obviously have sucked down some serious shit from someone who lied to you. Or, you're just an ignorant little twerp.
Colin K nor Wilson appear to be all black. Colin looks middle eastern. Doesn’t matter but if you write an article on it try to get it right.
That was what i was thinking. Why are we, well this guy, even talking about this? WTF does the race of the QB have to do with anything? We - most of the rest of the thinking world - are way, way past finding the race of the QB in any way remarkable.
I hear ya ! Jeez people, act like you've seen this before. COME ON, MAN !
Onona,
You need to get your HTML $hit together.
Just sayin.
Just to name a few...
Doug Williams
Micheal Vick
Byron Leftwich
Vince Young
Warren Moon
Randall Cunningham
Vince Evans
Steve Mcnair
Daunte Culpepper
Cordell Steward
Rodney Pete
Yes, these three young dual-threat, black quarterbacks have done well. But the problem with QBs that run so often is that they don’t hold up too well in the NFL. Donovan McNabb was once a frequent runner until he sustained season-ending injuries in three or four consecutive seasons.
RG3 was injured while running and missed a game a few weeks back. The question is still whether the running QB can last even a few seasons in the NFL before serious injuries diminish or end their ability to play the game.
And even with these three, all the coaches and knowledgeable observers want them to minimize the hits taken and to slide to avoid taking hits. I don’t think QBs who run frequently will have long careers in the NFL.
“The days of needing an established veteran at the quarterback position may be over.”
That’s going a bit too far. Most college quarterbacks aren’t cut out for the NFL. Many great college quarterbacks have no future whatsoever in the NFL. It never had to do with race, but the difference in the pro game and college.
” The days of needing an established veteran at the quarterback position may be over.”
Will they retract the article if the Super Bowl is Aaron Rodger vs Peyton Manning or Tom Brady?
Joe Kapp was in superbowl IV. He sure wasnt a passing quarterback...
He lost that Superbowl too. Warren Moon never played in a Superbowl, but won 4 or 5 Grey Cups. He is a Hall of Fame NFL quarterback and also black. He could scramble, but was more of a pocket passer in the NFL
