Police in Florida said they have arrested a man accused of stealing a $1.29 Iced Honey Bun from a store by stuffing it down his pants.
Palm Bay police said Brandon Phillips, 18, stuffed the small snack down his sweatpants at a 7-Eleven store Dec. 28 and fled on a bicycle when confronted by a store manager, WKMG-TV, Orlando, reported Friday.
Investigators said a K-9 unit tracked Phillips to a wooded lot where he was arrested and his bike was found nearby.
The Honey Bun was not recovered, police said.
Phillips was charged with retail petit theft, resisting arrest without violence and resisting in the recovery of merchandise.
LMBO!!!!!
And for stealing that honey bun, the perp should end up with a criminal record thatvwill keep him from ever joining society as an honorable person, and all the possible bodily harm, and diseases that often come with prison life?
California three strikes law is evidence that talibanizing minor crimes does not deter people from continuing to commit them.
The Bible does teach that the retribution and restitution should be kept at around the same level of the wrong.
That's below the scale of even of the $1.98 beauty show.
Don't know what kinda chick you can steal for that amount. NO HELL-ON THOMAS PICS, PLEASE!
C'mon, AT LEAST KEEP HIM OUT OF CONGRESS!
If he’s going to steal a honey bun, he’s too small minded to be part of Congress.
Perhaps a few terms as a city councilman will correct that little flaw. :)
Because petty larceny adds up. Some people steal <$5 at a time 10-20 times a day all of their lives.
I would rather he be made an example and sent to jail for three years. Seriously! We are paying a TON of money of products in stores due to this so called “petty crime”. I would like to see for 2013 that anybody caught stealing anything at all be put in fail for a minimum of 3 years to stop the rape of the innocent people who don’t steal. Call me heartless or whatever, but we are paying at least 50 dollars a month due to theft on our purchases.
In TX, that’s a Type C Misdemeanor (theft of under $20) with no jail time possible but a fine of as much as $500, more likely $200. But the resisting arrest complicates things.
Yes, the real mystery here is that the evidenced disappeared.
Had it been a donut shoved down his pants I might think he was transporting his significant others breaksfast or brunch, dependent on time of day.
If he was going ‘Commando’ and wearing baggy pants, the pastry didn’t stand a chance.
If someone has to steal a $1.29 pastry, how do they pay back a $500 fine?
lol
“Instead of putting this guy in jail and going through the courts for $1.29, there should be a way where the store and petty thief simply agree to let the guy wash the windows and pick up the trash for a half an hour or something.
Why spend thousands of taxpayer dollars on a case like this?”
It seems to me if the store owner wants that, it’s be ok.
But you’d need someone providing window wash stuff, making sure the job was done and done right, and watching him so he doesn’t stuff a bunch more merchandise down his pants.
Ideally, he should be able to work it off. Realistically, he wouldn’t show up, or he’d show up drunk, or he’d do a crap job, or he’d steal.
As for why spend thousands of dollars, it’s reality. Either we have a mechanism for businessmen to do business or we require them to allow theft. Is that more reasonable?
“The Bible does teach that the retribution and restitution should be kept at around the same level of the wrong.”
I agree with restitution, but there needs to be a system in place. Not the requirement that the business owner now has to arrange a punishment, convict, provide, certify, supervise, clean up, that’s all a bit of a punishment isn’t it?
There should be farms or factories where you put in so many hours if fairly convicted. Your earning should go to the farm for housing you, the justice system for trying you etc., the police, and the business owner you stole from. Do your time, pay your bill - I’d say no record for first offense.
I did say in isolation, if he has been doing this a while, I wouldn’t show any leniency. If you want to make an example of him, go ahead. I am just asking if it makes sense to waste all the time and money and energy on this guy, in isolation from everything else.
It’s pretty stupid. Meanwhile Bernie Maddoff counts his billions and laughs and 0bamugabe racks up trillions and laughs. Why should this guy, or anyone else for that matter, think the rule of law means anything? It doesn’t.
Excuse me, if you routinely don’t prosecute $1.29 thefts, then the threshold will be $12.90, then $129 then $1290. Theft is theft, regardless of the amount, even a penny.
What was he supposed to do, he’d left his EBT card in some stripper’s g-string.
