Over the years, my wife and I have taken this time of year to make donations to various organizations. My wife has generally chosen different avenues to help than I have (in the civilian sector locally) since I tend to choose organizations dedicated to helping the military (the exception being the Salvation Army) such as the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society, The Wounded Warrior Project, etc. (I was a brat and served myself, so I prefer giving to those types of organizations)
One of the organizations I have given money to over the years is the USO, and for personal reasons, I have decided to contribute elsewhere.
Can any Freepers suggest any other organizations they have given to that do a good job of getting assistance to those who need it in our military community? I am particularly interested in those that have low overhead and pass a higher portion of donations on to those in need.
Your very welcome.
And yes, I have heard many things about the WWP. I probably should not say.
The Silver Star Families is a great org. They never leave anyone behind. They even send prayer blankets to our dying vets.
Oh me too. I remember back in the 70’s I was working for one of the United Way charities. My boss and I were so excited that we saved them money from our budget. I took the saved money to their office and right in the middle of the lobby they dressed me down in front of everyone and told me if we did not spend that money(every cent), our budget would be cut the next year. How’s that for encouragement? (sarc) I was so embarrassed and humiliated. That was the end of United Way for me. Never again.
The head of the Red Cross can take a big pay cut with what she/he makes.
VFW - Unmet Needs. They help the families of active duty military. I know how tough that can be on soldier’s pay.
Oh yes. Only about 10 cents on the dollar went to the actual benefit of the charity where as the other 90 cents went to them.
We are in the process of donating one of our old cars to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
US NAVY VETERANS ASSOCIATION. Extreme Example of fraud. Knew this John Cody a$$hole before he became Bobby Thompson. His bogus charity scammed $200,000,000.00 from well intended donors like George W. Bush. Story link: http://www.charitywatch.org/articles/US_Navy_Veterans_Association.html
That son of a bitch. Reading that made my blood boil.
Cody was wanted earlier for espionage by the FBI before being nabbed on this. Strange due. Search FBI most wanted.
In war and peace the AER does great work on every Army installation in the world.....http://www.aerhq.org/dnn563/
