I'd be right next to momtothree with oranges, honey and tea. And maybe a hat to keep your head warm.

Do you feel comfy now?

P.S. Don't forget George Dickel, the best Cascade Hollow, TN has to offer. Dickel Tickle, with George Dickel® Tennessee whiskey, Southern Comfort® peach liqueur, Pimm's® gin, lime juice and lemonade. Remember, it's all medicinal, this I know, for the Bible tells me so :o)

“Dickel Tickle... it’s all medicinal..”

Wow! It knocks you out so you can get some rest! That sounds wonderfully “medicinal”, Mrs. Don-0!!

I apologize for something off-color this Christmas season, but your mention of the Whiskey reminded me of a fictitious advertisement for a particular brand of Cider with a double-entendre name.

I had to readjust my reading glasses, and then saw the post was from you.

Acting upon your suggestion, I shall do the best with what I have:

Bushmills Irish Whiskey (or Minnesota-brewed 2 Gingers Irish Whiskey) with Peach Schnapps, Peppermint Schnapps, and Orange Juice.

Not exactly 1 Timothy 5:23, but it'll do in a pinch.

To paraphrase humor columnist Dave Barry, "...since I began drinking [heavily] I do not have one cold which I remember clearly."

And, yes, I am wearing a scarf.

Cheers, and thanks for the well-wishes.

...oh, and Merry Christmas!

Thanks, momtothree.

If *I* did live near you, I'd have a pot of chicken ice cubes. I think it's dropping down to 12 degrees tonight.

Oh well, the cat likes to cuddle when it gets too cold. It'll help.

Merry Christmas,

Years ago, my wife and I discovered that you can make chicken soup without having to get it in cans from the supermarket. What we do is we buy one of those "entire" chickens from the supermarket and after we roast it and use the meat, we put the carcass into a pot, fill it full of water and boil it for several hours.

The result is that the water in the pan turns into something that tastes just like chicken soup!

We then pull out the bones and strain it a couple of times to make sure we got all that gunky stuff (from the carcass) out of the mix. Then we toss in some potatoes and carrots and boil for another hour or so. The flavor in this "soup" is pretty intense and just as good, if not better, than the chicken soup made by Campbells or Progresso.

You can also do the same trick with turkey.

Oh and if you ran out of jars of gravy on the lazy susan... and want gravy for your roasted chicken and mashed potatoes, my mom figgured out how to use the drippings from the chicken. Mom’s sure smart!

Well I'm sure there are others out there who have thought of the same thing. It does take a lot longer to make chicken soup that way so I'm not sure I will be able to convince too many people to move away from the canned soup.

There are some other food items my wife and I created that might be more marketable, should we ever be inclined to go into business.

On of my favorite "home made" sandwiches is to wrap smoked sardines (soaked in olive oil) into a slice of swiss cheese which is then wrapped tightly into a tortilla wrap. It's very delicious and if I can find a way to make it not so messy (the olive oil tends to drip out), I could market it as a healthy fast-food option.

Yes, I know that those are matzoh balls. Traditionally, matzoh ball soup is a consomme without any vegetables or chicken meat in the finished version.

People eat canned soup? Really? Didn’t anyone have a mother or grandmother who taught them how to cook?
I commend you for not making your own soup. I posted a recipe that I learned from a French chef. You need to make the broth first with the chicken and vegetables, and then strain it and begin to make the soup with another chicken and new vegetables.
It makes a big difference to brown the chicken first in the pot before you add the water. By all means add bones from leftover roast chicken to make the broth.

Interesting post. Friday I was diagnosed with pneumonia. On Saturday, a kind neighbor brought chicken soup. I ate it as hot as possible, and with a lot of pepper. An hour later, I felt great. Sadly, it only lasted about 12 hours, so I’ll see the doc tomorrow morning.

My dad used to tell about the mustard plasters his parents used to give the kids. It sounds disgusting and smelly, but effective. Might be something to consider.

Well, the Dems always claimed Reagan dubbed ketchup a “vegetable”, so chicken soup as medicine would provide Obama a way to declare that, yes, he’s like Reagan.

Sardines! Good for you! I love sardines, too, but Mr. Don-o thinks they smell too fishy. Um. That’s like cinnamon smells too cinamonny. What’s it supposed to smell like?

For something super healthy, I break the sardines up a bit, and put them in a good vegetable soup. For instance, a tomato-based minestrone. Oh, it’s so good.

“1 teaspoon whiskey (medicinal purposes only) followed by 1 teaspoons lemon/honey”

My friend, a TN common-sense old-timey healer, suggested the Jack Daniels/lemon/honey treatment. Not being familiar with most hard liquor, I talked to the guy at the liquor store. He suggested “Rock & Rye” instead of Jack Daniels. So I’ll get it shot.
