Obama remains committed to assault weapons ban, White House says

Washington (CNN) -- The White House said President Barack Obama supports reinstatement of a federal ban on assault weapons -- a position he took in the 2008 campaign but failed to press during his first term.

"It does remain a commitment of his," presidential spokesman Jay Carney told reporters as the nation reeled from a mass shooting in Connecticut that mainly killed school children.

An emotional Obama did not address that issue directly in a televised statement from the White House on the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown that killed 26 people but said something had to be done.

"We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics," said Obama, the father of two girls.

Elections have consequences, if the left bans guns, promotes communist fiscal policy and defunds the DOD well that is exactly what the people who voted for Obama voted for, I for one am tired of defending my positions which alwyas get put on trial by the left, let them destroy it all and when the people cry out over it, I will just scream out I told you so.

Just as an aside, my husband went to Gander Mtn and Cabellas today. He said it was packed and he did not think it was Christmas shopping. People are upset but are not necessarily reacting the way the libs want them to.

Texas will not go quietly into that dark night, and neither will many other red states.

The deep political left is mere inches away from pushing a button that will ignite the Second American Revolution, and which will result in a full restoration of this country’s Founding Charter.

Someone ought to tell them that they’re wearing a suicide bomb vest.

Obama and the left will try to convince Americans that they are only talking about banning AK-47’s or M-16’s when in fact their definition of assault weapons will be so broad that it will include most if not all guns with the exception of revolvers.

Why not investigate exactly why the kid went off the deep end, why did his mother feel that the economic conditions in America were falling apart and that they would soon have to protect themselves from those who would come after their posessions after the economy collapses and you don’t get your EBT, Food Stamps, Obamaphone, Obamacare, Section 8 housing well of course those that have something when you don’t are fair game because the President told you that...

Bans don’t mean a lot during civil wars.We are obligated to destroy the government that destroys the constitution. I hope the GOP doesn’t cave, but I’m not going to anyway...

no they won’t and no they won’t. Nobody wants to be on the side with the bad optics. Obama will do whatever measure he can to ban guns.

It’s over.

Lott offers a final damning statistic: “With just one single exception, the attack on congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011, every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry guns.”

How about we throw Obama inato a volcano and try to apease the gods? I know. It won't work, but at least we'd be doing something constructive.

Sure. Be stupid. Ban the weapons.

Only a fool like a liberal or a democrat would believe that that will prevent the insane, or the criminals among us from classroom violence, domestic violence, or mass murder with a gun or a car.

I'm pretty sure there are multiple laws on the books against gunning children down in a class room. There's also plenty of laws against stealing firearms. there's a federal law against 20 year olds having handguns. Connecticut law reafirms the prohibition on 20 year olds possessing handguns. There was a Connecticut state law against having an assault rifle in the first place. There was a law against carrying a fIrearm into the school.

HOW IN THE %&*$ WOULD ANOTHER LAW HAVE STOPPED THIS FROM HAPPENING?!?!

THIS IS NOT ABOUT PUBLIC SAFETY, IT IS ABOUT LIBERALS EXPLOITING A TRAGEDY TO RAM THEIR POLITICAL AGENDA DOWN OUR THROATS.

No!

I am extremely good with nunchaku, batons, tomahawks. I can throw scissors, screw drivers rail road spikes...hell just about anything.

I can also punch, kick, headbutt and choke.

I also have a car and a sharp dog.

Everything this side of a BUTTER KNIFE will be considered an “assault weapon”, by the time these clowns are done.

The ban, to make any kind of sense (unlike the prior “cosmetics” AWB), will be little other than any semiautomatic with potential capacity over N (5-10) rounds. That will include everything designed for (AR15, Glock) or easily adapted to (SKS) practically unlimited size magazines, and anything with a fixed magazine over N rounds. Setting N to 8 would keep the M1 Garand and Luger and many hunting rifles legal (maintaining the “battle arms are still legal, well a few ancient ones” argument) while eliminating pretty much everything not a bolt/lever action or revolver.

They’ll not ban them outright, for obvious reasons of backlash. A Executive Order will reinterpret the “sporting purpose” clause, and with minimal (if any) effort from Congress the aforementioned semiautomatics will be reclassified as NFA: legal once registered ($200 tax waived) during a limited time, strictly regulated like machineguns thereafter. See the saga of the Street Sweeper as how this will happen. The Left will get their ban while maintaining the “you can still own them” line.

I hesitate to publish this per the “loose lips sink ships” axiom, but they’re not idiots and have skirted this path more than once. Our side needs to get off the “take mine bullets first” mindset and on to realities of viable anti-RKBA politics.

One of the unintended consequences of this approach is ushering tens of millions of gun owners into the NFA realm, with “well if I’m gonna pay a $200 tax I may as well get something interesting like a short barreled rifle with suppressor”.

It’s gonna get ugly. Our side, on the whole, has no idea how it’s gonna get sucker punched. “FMCDH” really misses the reality.

Did anyone notice that we were never told which weapon were responsible for most deaths in the Aurora shooting?

Unofficial reports indicate the shotgun did the most damage, after the rifle jammed early.

No Pollyanna here, but a Constitutional amendment cannot be revoked with a mere stroke of Obama’s pen. It can only be repealed by the same long, cumbersome & difficult process by which amendments are passed in the first place, by a two thirds majority in Congress, then ratified by three fourths (that’s 38) of the states. As the Founders intended.

A majority of the states have CCW & Republican governors. The only Amendment ever repealed was the 18th (Prohibition) & that was wildly popular when it happened.

If Obama wants to behave like a dictator, he’ll be cutting a lot of Democrats’ throats in the Congress. Think 2014.

Checks & balances. Separation of powers. Tenth Amendment. Things of beauty, all of them.

I understand, but what he is doing is pushing the AWB and trying to classify certain kinds of guns with certain characteristics illegal to own.

They use the term “regulated” as a way to “Refuse” and “Restrict” and “revoke” an Amendment they know they’d never be able to overturn.

It is an end run around it and they’ve been allowed to get away with it forever.
