Obama remains committed to assault weapons ban, White House says

Washington (CNN) -- The White House said President Barack Obama supports reinstatement of a federal ban on assault weapons -- a position he took in the 2008 campaign but failed to press during his first term.

"It does remain a commitment of his," presidential spokesman Jay Carney told reporters as the nation reeled from a mass shooting in Connecticut that mainly killed school children.

An emotional Obama did not address that issue directly in a televised statement from the White House on the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown that killed 26 people but said something had to be done.

"We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics," said Obama, the father of two girls.

yes, let's punish law abiding sane people for the actions of a crazy POS. They will turn us into felons with the stroke of a pen.

U.S. Murders: All 13,636; Hands and Feet 801; Assault Rifles: less than 348

The FBI murder statistics do not differentiate between types of rifles. There are about 100 million rifles in the United States. In 2009, the last year in which numbers have been reported, there were 13,636 murders. Guns were used to murder 9,146 people. Hands and feet were used to murder 801 people. Blunt objects were used to murder 611 people. Rifles were used to murder 348 people, and that is all rifles, of which assault rifles are only a small fraction. Assault rifles are used so infrequently in homicides that many police departments almost never see them; in 2009, there were nine states that did not have a single murder committed with any rifle.

So why is the left so intent on banning rifles that are the most suitable for militia use (clearly protected by the U.S. Constitution), when they are used so rarely in murder?

the left projects the actionof a criminal nut onto the hundred millon law abiding gun owners in this country and equates all of them with the nutball who couldn’t even pass a background check to get a gun himself.

I hope the NRA is making very clear to any Republican that even considers bringing this or any other gun control to the floor that they will be destroyed in the 2014 Republican Primary, where the electorate tends to be conservative and pro-gun.

because it has never been about gun control for the left, it has always been about people control. I got news, if my kid was a crazy little effer like this, I wouldn’t have a closet full of guns readily available to him. This is momma’s fault.

so where ‘s the equivalent outcry for other wackjobs?

Mom drowns a bunch of her kids, must ban all moms from being alone with their kids, if we let them have kids at all.

Old people who get confused driving and run down a crowd or get on the highway, the wrong way, where’s the over-reach to paint all drivers like this and surrender their cars for everyone’s safety?

Alcoholics drivers, same thing, where’s the crowd painting all safe drivers as drunk killing machines that must be dis-carred?

All the pool deaths each year by kids? Where’s the liberal push to ban all safe homeowners with pools, to force them empty or fill-in their pools so/all the rest of us can be safe from them?

hypocritical idiots.

If we didn’t have obama not once but now for eight years we would not have such a terrible rush of Americans buying guns and ammo, and in that rush failed to provide security.

Its Obamas fault, most successful reason ever to buy guns. He created the gun buying frenzy.

more accurately we are one supreme from cwii if they attempt to revoke the 2nd amendment, which btw doesn’t bestow the right to keep and bear arms, but re-affirms the pre-existing right that predates the constitution. man has always had the right to self defense, it’s an integral part of the right to life. you can’t have a right to life and not be able to defend it with lethal force.

The GOP is (I’m afraid) going to cave.

They always do. They haven’t stood for much in the last twenty years.

The NRA is totally silent right now. Not even an update on their homepages since the murders. I have a feeling they will be pretty quiet about a ban also.

And make no mistake, it won’t be a ban on magazines or accessories. It will be a full on ban. This is the crises the State has been hoping for.

There are a lot of Democrats who have to walk a tight rope on this one. Most of them got the axe in 2010, but there are still a dozen or two more who reliably vote with the GOP on 2nd Amendment issues.

Because they're scary looking, and are one of the most effective tools against an armed tyrannical force.
